I have only done four embroidery projects in the past, and they were all simple "beginner" kits with outlines already printed on the fabric. They typically come with a couple of needles, the exact amount of thread you need (leaving little room for mistakes or re-do's), sometimes a wooden hoop, and instructions.

To compare, this kit comes with five individual projects, thread (and then some), a variety set of wide-eye/embroidery needles, squeezy scissors, a single plastic embroidery hoop, and a piece of paper with rudimentary instructions. Projects are separated from each other, and each projects' required threads are organized in thick cards with holes punched in; each hole punch in the card holds a certain color and somewhat more than is required to complete that color.

I am currently halfway through a project (the one with the corgi facing out, surrounded by leaves and flowers). The materials themselves are not the best, but certainly not the worst. For example, the scissors' blades are just a hair too far apart, making you have to really work at getting them to cut period. So they aren't really usable, but hey, we've all got regular scissors laying around right? No big deal. Then the instructions require you to take the thread and pull it apart. Each thread is six strands and a lot of the steps in the project require you to pull it apart (which isn't fun and takes a while to do). What I found is that when you do this, you need to be careful not to disturb the surface of the threads too much or they lint up infrequently, but it does happen especially if you are rough with the thread. Finally, the hoop is plastic, and I honestly prefer wooden hoops. I would have loved to receive more hoops so I could work on multiple projects at the same time.

The instructions are somewhat convoluted. They depict a layout of the project with labels on each part, first a number and the type of stitch. There are sub sections depicting and detailing the different types of stiches, which are somewhat helpful for reference. However, the instructions weren't so clear on exactly where they recommend, I should begin. They also don't explain if I should follow the numbers in sequential order and embroider it by section. I assumed that's what it means, so I've been slowly filling in with the darker green (#01), moving on to the sage green, which was labelled as #02, and going from there.

So far, I'm having a good time slowly chipping away at my project. The materials provided serve my needs, and the fact that this came with five separate projects enhances its value. The materials provided are of standard quality, and the instructions leave a lot to be desired for a beginner. However, I was and am able to use and complete the projects just fine without good instructions and the number of materials is generous. This would make a good gift, especially for someone stuck in bed (I just had hip surgery, so this is one thing I've been working on).

Birds came out beautifully and the instructions were simple. I changed up some of the colors and stitching to practice my embroidery and was very pleased with the end result.
