This was a fun read for me but there are some dark parts but it all evens out with the race for the win!

Leo’s character keeps this book fun.

If you are looking for a clean romance, this is *definitely* not that. The two protagonists are having sex like rabbits by the fifth chapter, after they have known each other all of a few minutes. This, of course, is why it is called a “fake” dating game, because supposedly they couldn’t possibly have fallen in love that fast, so it is just sex.
Not that Holden *couldn’t* fall in love, but he is busy trying to get over losing his boyfriend about 48 hours ago, and is looking for someone to replace him on a game show where he needs to be part of a couple. So, why not Leo. They could use the money. So they agree to be fake lovers, with benefits.

Holden doesn’t think anyone could love him. You know the story, so he doens’t think Leo is doing anything more than fake dating him, and having sex just for the fun of it.

If you want a cute fake dating romance with a lot of gay sex, then this book is for you. If you prefer your romances to hold back a little bit, then you should probably steer clear.

Disclaimer: I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for free and have voluntarily written this review.

Holden James was ready to jet off to Los Angeles with his boyfriend to audition for his favorite game show, Madcap Market. But when he is unceremoniously dumped, Holden takes the nonrefundable trip himself—and has a bit of a meltdown in his hotel room that leads to the smart-ass (and sexy) concierge arriving at his door with a pizza, Monopoly, and a distraction.

Holden doesn’t know much about Leo Min, but he does know their chemistry is off the charts—maybe even enough to fool the show’s casting directors that they’re a real couple. The pair just have to work hard to crush the competition, make sure they’ve got their stories straight, and then they’ll win—solving all of Holden’s problems.

I never thought I’d be invested in a game show that is some kind of mix between The Price is Right and Jeopardy, but Holden James really knows how to sell it! It was a bit hard to understand Holden’s obsession with the game show and why it seemed like it would make everything better at first, but Janovsky creates a rich history and emotional connection between Holden and Madcap Market that makes you wish it was a real game show that you could watch (or be a part of). It’s easy to relate to Holden’s ex-boyfriend and only scratch the surface of Holden’s connection to the game, but as the story progresses, the layers continue to be peeled away, leaving you wanting to wrap him up in a hug.

The back and forth between Holden and Leo is electric from the start, even when Holden kind of hates Leo. The story is told strictly from Holden’s POV and even though he seems to dislike Leo at first, it’s clear that there is something there right from the get-go. While it can be argued that Leo is only lovable because the reader is seeing him through Holden’s eyes, I think Janovsky finds a way to sneak in pieces of Leo that even Holden doesn’t understand at first and that allows the reader to truly fall for him as a character independent of Holden’s influence. Also, we absolutely stan a man who understands that drunken consent is not true consent!

What I thought would be a lighthearted and fun read was…well, it was that, but it was also so much deeper. The death of Holden's mother weighs heavy on him throughout and his relationship with his grief is a prominent part of the story. Following along in Holden's grieving process allows the reader to understand how truly non-linear the grieving and healing process is. It really struck a chord with me and allowed me to feel a little better about the way in which my emotions change when confronting my own grief and loss. Janovsky managed to pack a lot into a little package and found a way to really balance the comedy with the tougher topics.

This was such a cute read. There was instant chemistry between Holden and Leo. I usually dislike when romance is too insta-lovey, but I didn't feel the cringe here. Holden and Leo were great for each other. They were friends as well as romantic interests. I also really enjoyed the premise here. I was never one to watch and enjoy Supermarket Sweep, but I could appreciate the inspiration behind it in this story. I also felt the author handled the subject of grief very well and found it extremely relatable. There is no real getting over grief, or making it easier over time, just allowing it to become less sharp over time and not have it overwhelm you. I really liked watching Holden's healing journey there. All in all, this is just a simple, cute, and fun read with some good emotion. Definitely worth the read.

Thank you Harlequin Romance and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I enjoyed this one from the first page! Holden has been grieving his mother since she died six years ago. He thought he could surprise his boyfriend with a trip and a chance to be on the game show Madcap Market. His boyfriend, now ex, had other plans. Since the show was so important to him and his mom he decides to go anyway, there just one problem he had to have a partner. He thinks a friend might help but she cares more about his ex. Feeling down he drowns his blues in booze and music, Leo the concierge, helps him out of his funk. It doesn’t hurt that he’s super hot. Eventually Leo, facing difficulties of his own, suggests they pretend to be in a relationship and go on the show. It’s not that simple though, they have to come up with a plausible story and even convince their families that they’re really dating. It helps that their chemistry is off the charts. Once on the show though Holden is faced with a surprise that will throw him through a loop. Can they win? And what happens if they begin to catch real feelings? Can a few day old relationship turn into more? I think Timothy Janovsky has another hit with this one! Like his other books it’s funny, charming, and heartwarming but the spiciness is kicked up a notch! A fun fast paced romance that readers won’t be able to put down!
