About this item

Hannah “Kitten Lady” Shaw and professional cat photographer Andrew Marttila journey to thirty countries to bring you hundreds of photos and stories of cats from every corner of the world.

Wife and husband team Hannah Shaw and Andrew Marttila have made cats their lives' work: they rescue and rehabilitate neonatal kittens, educate the public on cat and kitten care, and capture our feline friends' unique personalities through writing and photography.

Now, in the project of their dreams, they've taken their passion for cats global. In Cats of the World, Shaw and Marttila travel across thirty countries to explore feline welfare and cat culture around the globe, documenting their travels with stunning photos and stories from each location.

Journey to England's charming pubs and candle-lit cathedrals, Chile’s vibrant produce markets and colorful hillsides, Türkiye’s spice bazaars and ancient ruins, South Africa's bustling streets and lush mountains, and so many places in between with Shaw and Marttila as they learn from cats—and the people who love them most—that compassion is truly a universal language.

* This audiobook edition includes a downloadable PDF of over 100 photos of the cats featured in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

This is a wonderful book, an inspiring and informative snapshot into how cats are treated in other countries and the people who care for them (both domestic and feral). The photography is beautiful and provides a glimpse of the natural and architectural features of the landscapes cats are found in. It is well written and goes into local rescue groups and trap, neuter, return efforts in the varying cities that were highlighted. It shows there is compassion around the world for cats regardless of language, ethnics or religion. A beautiful testament to the resilience of cats and the humans who share their lives with them.

Hannah and Andrew put their lives where their passion is--rescuing animals, educating people on kitten rescue, and sharing dazzling images of feline friends.

This book is beautiful. The images are so lovely and compelling, I couldn't stop turning the pages.

After soaking up Andrew's photos, I took my time with Hannah's stories. I really loved her description of cats tiptoeing around walls and learning the different ways people interact with village cats, shop cats, and church cats around the world.

If you like beautiful travel photography, this book is for you. If you like travel logs, this book is for you. If you just like cats, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new authoritative volume on cats and their place in the world

This is a stunning book that reveals the ways in which people and cats are intertwined across the world, among various cultures and peoples. I've never seen an exploration of cats in this way - the photos are stunning and the text is thoughtful, incisive, and so authoritative. I would expect no less from the authors, who are authorities on cats, their health, and their welfare. One of the factors I really enjoyed was the focus on the humans who love and care for these animals; I see I am no different in my feelings about these animals than others completely across the world from me. This is a lovely volume, and anyone who is fascinated by cats will be enriched by this book!

Cats of the World is full of beautiful pictures of cats and cultures from around the globe. Alongside the pictures are tales of humans who look after and care for these cats. I haven’t had a chance to go through the whole book yet, but any page a flip to to gives me wonderful images to enjoy and stories of compassion that bring me joy. I had to buy one for my friend’s birthday, because she is as much of an animal lover as I am.
