About this item

Dr. Eben Alexander, author of international phenomenon Proof of Heaven, shares the next phase of his journey to understand the true nature of consciousness and how to cultivate a state of harmony with the universe and our higher purpose.

In 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander's brain was severely damaged by a devastating case of bacterial meningitis, and he lapsed into a weeklong coma. It was almost certainly a death sentence, but Dr. Alexander miraculously survived and brought back with him an astounding story. During those seven days in coma, he was plunged into the deepest realms of consciousness, and came to understand profound truths about the universe we inhabit. What he learned changed everything he knew about the brain, mind, and consciousness and drove him to ask a question confounding the entire scientific community: How do you explain the origins of consciousness if it is not a byproduct of the brain? His challenge relates to a revolutionary shift now underway within our modern scientific understanding. Ultimately, direct experience is key to fully understanding how we are all connected through the binding force of unconditional love and its unlimited power to heal.

In Living in a Mindful Universe, the New York Times bestselling author of Proof of Heaven and The Map of Heaven shares his insights into the true nature of consciousness. Embracing his radically new worldview, he began a committed program of personal exploration into non-local consciousness. Along the way, he met Karen Newell, who had spent most of her lifetime living the worldview he had only just discovered was possible. Her personal knowledge came from testing various techniques and theories as part of her daily routine. With Living in a Mindful Universe, they share techniques that can be used to tap into our greater mind, explore how the power of the heart, and discuss how both can enhance healing, relationships, creativity, guidance, and more. Using various modalities related to meditation and mindfulness described herein, you too can gain the power to access that infinite source of knowing so vital to us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book on life, death and consciousness surviving when we die.

When one reaches the 8th decade of life one often thinks about their own mortality. My wonderful life has been filled with numerous exciting experiences and of course many thousands of books. My passion has been both science and the esoteric. I recently purchased a 272-page soft cover book (Living in a mindful universe: A neurosurgeon’s journey into the heart of consciousness by Eben Alexander, MD. with Karen Newell) on Amazon that was on a subject I have been interested in for many years.

The fact that it is also written by a medical doctor makes it even more intriguing. One of the reasons I purchased this book is because I had read a previous book (Proof of heaven) by this author. This volume explores in more detail the author’s further research into life, death, the mind, consciousness and the universe. There is a lot to ponder in the 16 chapters and appendix section of this book from the preface to the end of this wonderful book.

Some of the unique and informative topics covered in this book are as follows: “Making sense of it all, science meets spirituality, the power of prayer, riding the wave of consciousness, the answers lie within us all, mind over matter, thriving in the heart of consciousness and other excellent chapters.

If you are a seeker of knowledge about some of the many mysteries of science and the esoteric this is a book you will want to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing the paradigm

I read 'Proof of Heaven' then 'The Map of Heaven' some time back and found both very inspiring. Reading this new work 'Living in a Mindful Universe' several years later underscores my conviction that we are gradually leaving behind the outdated scientific materialist paradigm that has dominated the western world for 400 years and are now entering a much more expanded world view which holds consciousness front and center as its guiding principle. Yes we continue to hear much grinding and gnashing of teeth from proponents of the old materialist paradigm but I feel assured it is going way the of the dinosaurs. Metaphysical idealism and similar philosophical outlooks are the new basis for a much more expanded view of the universe that will increasingly underpin the cutting edge of human inquiry into the nature of reality and will hopefully spread out into the mass of society over time.
In 2007 I myself had an OBE (out of body experience) whereby my conscious self shot out of the top of my head whilst sitting on a midnight latrine deep in the Amazon jungle. Talk about going from the ridiculous to the sublime as I immediately found myself face to face with the Godhead at the center of the universe and came close to being obliterated by the totally overwhelming force of love eminating from this being. In retreating back to planet earth I encountered the cosmic Christ even though I am not a religious person in the sense of belonging to any organised church. He showered me with unconditional love for a long long time. Then it was time to leave and on coming closer to earth I found myself in the presence of the archangel Michael who also showered me with love and let me know that I should communicate with him regarding my concerns and problems during everyday human life. As is the case with other journiers I was gone a long time in subjective experience, perhaps weeks, but on my return I found I had been gone perhaps less than half an hour.
To read more about this journey see my book 'Long Road to Chavin' by Martin Stevens published 2018 on Amazon. Needless to say having had this direct experience myself has made me fascinated with others who have had their own journeys out over the other side of the veil and Eben Alexander's oevre has got to be one of the best and most eruditely-expressed examples of this genre. The fact that he is an experienced neurosurgeon makes his narratives even more compelling.
I highly recommend 'Living in a Mindful Universe' and feel that it adds weight to the body of emerging wisdom underlying the emergence of a new world view.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of new age pseudoscience

Dr Alexander has a compelling story to tell about his near death experience (NDE) and it is similar to one experienced by one of our elders at church. There is clearly a phenomenon of human experience that challenges us to understand how this happens and from whence it comes. Fortunately the author takes us through his journey to make sense of this and other dreams and neuroconfabulations studied for the last fifty years. It is not settled science nor clearly tied to anything ‘quantum’ in a mechanical sense. Consciousness is a key human experience that is part of our DNA. It is perhaps better that we look deeply at our subcellular encoding for the origins and answers. Coincidences are interesting because of what they suggest; we must take great care to ordain these phenomena as proof in fact unless and until we have a sufficiently robust phenomenological construct that allows predictability and reproducibility.
