5.0 out of 5 stars This gave me the creeps, but in the best way!

I've read both books in this series in under a week. I have enjoyed the dark gothic feel of the book and the angst of not being able to guess what's happening next.
I used to be stingy with rating books as a 5 star read, but if I would read it again or if I can't wait to read the next book it is a 5 and based on those qualifications, the answer is a resounding YES!
I LOVED Verity's story and the imagery in this book creates an enchanting world you can almost see and smell. I can't wait to see what the third book brings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twisted Tale

I've struggled with my rating, and I absolutely hate the waxing between a 5 and a 4. A lot of consideration goes into the star rating. Did I love it? Is it a favorite? How did it make me feel?

This, without a doubt, would've been a 5 except for the secret passage scene where our heroine discovers an unsavory book. Of course, she's likely to have had the reaction to the erotic scenes on the pages. But what purpose did the scene serve? I was really uncomfortable with it and waited to see where that thread would lead. Maybe it went toward the more passionate dreams/scenes? Was that the reasoning? I can see that...but still, I'm not a fan of the entire scene at all.

I loved the world building and the twistedness of every little thread being pulled tautly. I really would love to read another book because the ending and epilogue left that door wide open. There's something so very speldid about a mind-blowing book that turns you upside down, even if you suspect it's verging on a precipice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eerie and engaging

It was such fun seeing Craig return to this world, and I loved that while the background of Salt and Sorrows informed the story, this works well as a standalone, and my fears about not recalling enough from the first book were swiftly erased as the youngest Thalmus sister is swept off to a new land with a new cast of characters and a new literary-inspired narrative to follow, this time drawing on The Island of Dr. Moreau (among others, though this felt most central to me). We swap satin slippers and tempestuous sea imagery for shadowed gardens and gruesome plant imagery. Craig cleverly plants (no pun intended) a host of reasons her heroine can't completely trust what she's experiencing. Drugs. Dreams. Divine intervention. An ability to speak with ghosts that blurs the lines between the living and the dead. And a few other twists I won't give away here. Once the heroine--and the reader--are left without any firm footing, a suspenseful mystery unfolds. What's really going on in the house of roots and ruin? Can the heroine trust anyone at all? Or should she run for her life before she's trapped in the house and the family, a pawn in a nefarious plot that involves a lot of shady dealings and more than one villain to unmask? Full of her trademark sense of lush atmosphere and eerie imagery, Craig delivers an engaging story about botanical mysteries, ghosts and gods, a family that's rotten to the core, and the perils of unchecked experimentation.

The plot moved along well and the twists were great. My only regret is that I had read the first book so long ago.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Overall Review
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024
Compared to the first book, I was disappointed in this one. Before starting I figured it would tie in more to the first book. However, in my opinion it did not. The story line for me was also a little out there and I could not get into it.

I anxiously awaited the release of this next installment in the Sisters of the Salt series. I read House of Salt and Sorrows a few months ago and could not put the book down until it was finished. House of Roots and Ruin did not disappoint! I read the book in a day and mourned every disruption I experienced because I just wanted to keep reading! Craig has a way with words and certainly knows how to create a good mystery! She will keep you on your toes, wanting to know more. I have enjoyed all of her books so far. I highly recommend her book, Small Favors, as well. I can't wait to read more books from this highly recommend.
