About this item

Michigan. To tens of thousands of womyn from around the globe, the word meant not a state in the upper Midwest of the U.S., but a state of mind, a state of freedom. A culture, a community, a revolution. The Land. From 1976 to 2015, the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival was home ground for the lesbian feminist movement. There we strove to embody the principles of matriarchal feminism and bring that wisdom to life in every aspect of the town we created, and the values that guided our lives together.

Lisa Vogel manages to evoke the marvelous and subversive spirit of this magical city, the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, that bloomed out of the mist once a year like Avalon or Brigadoon. And she delves into the grit and sweat that made it all possible. Her belief in a world free of the patriarchy, her strength and determination to make it happen, well, they are the stuff of legend. Michigan was a life changing event for me and many thousands of others. And finally here in Lisa’s own nimble and liberating prose, she captures the essence and heart of this miracle, as well as its thorny contradictions. What a book to lift your spirit in troubled times.

Lisa Vogel recreated in this book what it was like to be at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. For anyone who was there, this is a must read, which shows the peaks of happiness, and lows of almost despair, and how Lisa moved through both to make this the most unforgettable experience.

If you attended, this is a must read. If you just want to learn of the significance of creating a culture to live in and a time for womyn to gather, you should read this.

I was there for 20 of the early years, and then the last one. I want to thank Lisa Vogel for putting down in words her view of that history.

Michigan Women's Music Festival was and is an empowering movement, very much a community affair. Lisa Vogel tells her story of starting this event in a pivotal time for women and for lesbians. She shares glimpses of the work involved and the many people who helped grow Michfest I cherish my memories and the friendships Michfest fostered. Lisa's memoir about producing Michfest affirmed my commitment to building community and building bridges between differences.
