About this item

The incredible story of an all-deaf high school football team’s triumphant climb from underdog to undefeated, their inspirational brotherhood, a fascinating portrait of deafness in America, and the indefatigable head coach who spearheaded the team, by New York Times reporter and San Francisco Bureau Chief, Thomas Fuller.

"The Boys of Riverside is another example of how anyone can achieve their dreams, making what appears impossible, possible.”—Marlee Matlin, Academy Award winner

In November 2021, an obscure email from the California Department of Education landed in New York Times reporter, Thomas Fuller’s, inbox. The football team at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, a state-run school with only 168 high school students, was having an undefeated season. After years of covering war, wildfires, pandemic, and mass shootings, Fuller was captivated by the story of this group of high school boys. It was uplifting. During the gloom of the pandemic, it was a happy story. It was a sports story but not an ordinary one, built on the chemistry between a group of underestimated boys and their superhero advocate coach, Keith Adams, a deaf former athlete himself. The team, and Adams, tackled the many stereotypes and seemed to be succeeding. Fuller packed his bags and drove seven hours to the Riverside campus.

The Boys of Riverside looks back at the historic 2021 and 2022 seasons in which the California School for the Deaf chased history. It follows the personal journeys of their dynamic deaf head coach, and a student who spent the majority of the season sleeping in his father’s car in the Target parking lot. It tells the story of a fiercely committed player who literally played through a broken leg in order not to miss a crucial game, as well as myriad other heart-wrenching and uplifting narratives of players who found common purpose. Through their eyes, Fuller reveals a portrait of high school athletics, inspiring camaraderie, and deafness in America.

This book is inspirational and informative. I learned a lot about the world of deaf citizens and also eight man football. Easy, quick read.

Capturing the spirit of a story like this that includes play by play descriptions of football games isn't easy. This entertaining novel is a remarkable achievement.

Language acquisition by young children is a fascinating thing to behold, essential to mental health and not fully understood. (See “The Language Instinct” by Steven Pinker) Most of us establish language through our ears, but language is equally essential for the deaf and can be well developed through sight, where speaking becomes signing and listening is visual. The author of this book definitely understands this issue and how the prejudices of the hearing have worked to deprive the deaf of opportunities to develop language capabilities. He covers both historical prejudice against the deaf and the development of multiple sign languages. Unfortunately, the author has chosen to use a successful deaf high school’s football team’s championship run as the backbone and objective of this narrative. The result is a hodgepodge. Two seasons, football results predictable, switching between football, the prejudice of the large hearing world, some fascinating examples of natural language acquisition by deaf infants (deaf infants babble naturally, just like hearing infants—they just do it by signing!), and there are some serious injuries in the football season. I certainly learned something. I’m not sorry I read the book. But it is not a good read.

I am not a fan of football, considering I live about 40 miles from the Green Bay Packers I am rare. But when I saw this book it intrigued me. It was fascinating. I was enthralled with how the Deaf community was treated, especially kids. Until I read this book I honestly never gave it much thought, what an eye opener. My child played football through college and I remember going to those early morning practices, sweating through the August games then freezing in the October ones. What those boys went through physically and emotionally was just amazing. They have such character! This is a very well written and such a great read book. I highly recommend it. You won’t be sorry you did, even if you could care less about football. Enjoy it!!

Yes it's about deaf football, which is interesting, but is is also about the beginnings of sign language which I knew very little about, how it was formed and came to be. Also there are many forms of sign language.

I taught at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf many years ago. It brought back so many memories. I found the experiences of these kids rang true. I am honored that I had the opportunity to teach these deaf students and learned a lot from them.
