Really fun murder mystery

I was ready to give this 5 stars because it was such a fun read up until an aspect of the ending pertaining to the love interest that I don't want to specify because of spoilers.
I thought I was going to be lost at first because of how many characters there were (I struggle with remembering names) but the map and list of characters at the beginning helped a lot! I flipped back to both throughout the story.
I thought the way the author gave pieces to solve the mystery was good. Not telegraphing everything too much, but nothing came out of nowhere, either.
The relaxed writing style and angsty MC had me unsure if I was going to like this but it made this really easy to read and I ended up really enjoying it! The angst made sense for a 22 year old who has grown up with trauma.
While there are a lot of sexual or somewhat vulgar jokes the romance is slightly spicy closed door.
If you like movies like Clue or Knives Out you'll probably enjoy the vibes of this (if you're also okay with some fantasy mixed in).
For those who wonder about chapter length, chapters are on the longer side.

4.5 ⭐️
Interesting concept: 12 favored individuals, one leader each for the kingdom’s 12 provinces - the only people known to have magic in the kingdom - set sale on a 12 day voyage dictated by tradition. They’re the only real people on this ship, and they begin to die in suspicious ways thus starting our close proximity murder mystery where at least one of them is up to no good. It’s Dee’s self proclaimed duty to sort out the clues to solve who is behind the murders.
I would argue the murder mystery is secondary to the main character’s self discovery journey. Dee, our MC, is amazing and makes this story what it is. His witty, but crude, humor is just my style. I laughed so many times reading this book. He’s sarcastic and willing to stand up for what is right when all others will fault him for it. Dee, and a few others, work through some very serious topics in this story ensuring there’s far more to the book than humor. I was so excited for this read and it didn’t disappoint.

Magical Zodiac-like Teens, Make it Gay on a Cruise, and then Add In Clue.

This book was hands down one of my favorite books of this year. It has amazing queer representation. I have been thinking about this book for a month since I've read it. The characters are witty and I love Grasshopper so much. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun read that is a fantasy while being a mystery setup like Clue.
There are so many diverse characters, and the storyline has more going on that I'd love to know more about. I would not mind seeing more books set in this world, be it in different eras. It can be a little bit graphic with the deaths, but it's nothing too graphic. More just explaining what happened.

Death on the Nile meets Fruits Basket

This was an absolutely phenomenal book and will easily make my top ten of year. I can already say that for certain.
Voyage of the Damned is a murder mystery that takes place over a 12 day cruise featuring an extremely unique and diverse cast of 12 passengers with secret superpowers.
I was on the edge of my seat nearly the entire time reading! I couldn’t have guessed the details surrounding the heart-racing conclusion. I had my theories and while I did guess the correct suspect in the end, I was still left completely flabbergasted by the reveals. THIS is how you tell a murder mystery!
The incredible amount of representation in this book was awe-inspiring. There was mental health, disability, chronic illness, plus-size, bisexual, trans, non-binary, lesbian, and POC representations, and probably a few others that I missed! A quote from this book reads, “To be fair, most Blessed are usually a little gay.” I loved reading about each and every member of this cast, they were all so vivid and complex and unique!
This truly is a book meant for anyone who has ever felt like they do not belong. You are not nothing.

This was such a fantastic read! Once I started reading this book, it was impossible to stop; I finished it within two days. Great story development, characters, and plot. I also enjoyed the overall diversity.

Decent but Needs work

That being said the book does have its issues. I wish Amazon and other sites allowed half star reviews. It feels like a 3.5 star read. I had fun reading it and enjoyed the murder mystery party mixed with a 'Fruits Basket' zodiac type tale, but the world building and writing was difficult to read and follow at times. The characters were not that deep, nor wholly developed. It WAS nice to see the LGBTQIA+ representation but it could have been so much better. I felt left wanting more details. Also being an overweight person... this book felt more like a fatphobia thing, than sympathizing with it... I did not get the vibe the author was going for with that. The ending also just felt so quick. Like band aid, its done, we'll figure the rest out later. There is a romance but no spice. Which is fine I don't need that in books for them to be good. The book also feels more like a younger read, than the audience it was selected for. Idk I'm having trouble even putting into words what could have been done better, like it's ALMOST there. It felt like we read all the major plot points but with none of the good stuff in between that makes me LOVE the characters or world. I always try to leave constructive but considerate criticism. With all that said, I do see potential from this Author in the future and I did have fun reading it.
