About this item

A major new history of the Crusades with an unprecedented wide scope, told in a tableau of portraits of people on all sides of the wars, from the author of Powers and Thrones.

For more than 1,000 years, Christians and Muslims lived side by side, sometimes at peace and sometimes at war. When Christian armies seized Jerusalem in 1099, they began the most notorious period of conflict between the two religions. Depending on who you ask, the fall of the holy city was either an inspiring legend or the greatest of horrors. In Crusaders, Dan Jones interrogates the many sides of the larger story, charting a deeply human and avowedly pluralist path through the crusading era.

Expanding the usual timeframe, Jones looks to the roots of Christian-Muslim relations in the eighth century and tracks the influence of crusading to present day. He widens the geographical focus to far-flung regions home to so-called enemies of the Church, including Spain, North Africa, southern France, and the Baltic states. By telling intimate stories of individual journeys, Jones illuminates these centuries of war not only from the perspective of popes and kings, but from Arab-Sicilian poets, Byzantine princesses, Sunni scholars, Shi'ite viziers, Mamluk slave soldiers, Mongol chieftains, and barefoot friars.

Crusading remains a rallying call to this day, but its role in the popular imagination ignores the cooperation and complicated coexistence that were just as much a feature of the period as warfare. The age-old relationships between faith, conquest, wealth, power, and trade meant that crusading was not only about fighting for the glory of God, but also, among other earthly reasons, about gold. In this richly dramatic narrative that gives voice to sources usually pushed to the margins, Dan Jones has written an authoritative survey of the holy wars with global scope and human focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the Crusades
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2024
I purchased this book because I was interested in the crusades as I knew nothing about them at the time and wanted to see what all the 'fuss' was about. This book was a great overview of the crusades and kept my interest as it tracks various characters of the crusades to keep things interesting. Rather than having a boring timeline going through each event of the crusades, this book focuses on key characters during each crusade and you develop a sense of presence within all sides of the crusades.

I would recommend this to someone who is looking for an overview of all of the crusades but doesn't have the time or energy to read multiple 1,000 page reviews. For those who are looking for a detailed look at the crusades I would likely steer away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, except for editing issues

His style of writing has gotten much better since his first books, which were good but a bit plodding, and I've mostly enjoyed this one. However, it desperately needed a better editor. Or any editor, for that matter. If not for that, I would have rated five stars. I've seen no evidence of a leftist agenda, as another reviewer accused. Both Crusaders and Muslims are presented as they were, which means violent, bigoted and intolerant, yet frequently filled with a zeal for their version of their religions that accomplished quite a lot.

I'm digging into family history. I'm related to British Royals and I'm looking for any connection to the Templars. Hoping this book will help. I have gotten 1/4 of the way through. Very good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Crusades

I have read every book on the crusades and I am always amused by how dumb and immature some leaders were. Mr. Jones did it again. He already turned me from a general historian to a heavy medieval nut. Pretty soon I will have finished every book Jones wrote as well as many other writers. But, this is now the definitive crusades book all schools should use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Crusader Book By Far.

This book is probably the most bipartisan book on the crusades I've ever read. Dan Jones pulls no punches in telling it like it was without making anyone or any group of people out to be the sole heroes or the sole villians.

As in all of his books he makes history entertaining, informative, and thoroughly enjoyable to read. I like that he didn't restrict himself or his readers just to the "holy" land but took us all over Europe and the near East and he didn't stop at the fall of Jerusalem and call it a day, but went farther and even brought it to a soft conclusion in the modern day. He also gave us just enough peripheral information to understand an event without going off on a tanget.

I saw no leftist agenda anywhere in the book as other reviewers have said and I'd fully recommend this book to anyone

A very good read, thorough enough for the above average reader or academic. Combines the history & stories of the Christians, early successes, Muslims and the capture of Jerusalem, and even the end of the Western expansion of the Mongols. Get it. You’ll eventually get through it and enjoy it.
