About this item

A series of gruesome murders on the Lincolnshire fens. An old enemy from the past. A deadly game of cat and mouse.

The peaceful little village of Saltern-le-Fen is buzzing with excitement. A film crew are in town, shooting a new TV police drama, Fen Division Five. But Detective Jackman receives a disturbing tip-off that something is wrong.

Detective Marie Evans meanwhile is looking forward to moving into her dream home. But there’s no time to celebrate. The naked body of a young man is found at the river’s edge. He’s been strangled, his skin massaged in expensive oil.

Two days later, another handsome young man is discovered in a shallow lake. His throat cut. He too is lathered in body oil.

At the same time, an arch enemy from the past emerges. A master manipulator who has his sights on Jackman and Evans. From behind the bars of his high security prison, he’s putting the finishing touches to a devastating revenge plan.

As they hunt a brutal killer, Jackman and Evans are themselves hunted in a deadly game of cat and mouse – and the stakes could not be higher.

This books is crazy great! Ellis takes the reader all over the place with the case. So many people involved. So many twists and turns. Her characters are deeply connected and that emotion definitely translates to this reader. The excitement builds as she pulls everything back together for a thrilling ending. I always give a big sigh when I’m done the book and hope there are more to come.
All her books are that great! Every series of books is that thrilling!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Gripping and A Great Ending.

Another thrilling addition to the Jackman and Evans series and a brilliant end to one long running saga. Convolutions and lots of red herrings. The writing and dialogue seemed a tad trite at times…everyone was always getting coffee or tea with concomitant verbiage around that. Still, a very satisfying plot and great characters.

Joy Ellis never disappoints! This is another gripping read from her Jackman and Evan’s series, total page turner and one I could not put down. A fitting end to the terror of the villain, Ashcroft! Joy’s ability to tell fascinating stories with very interesting characters are very appealing, such a brilliant writer. Highly recommend!

I finished Book 9, Solace House, last weekend knowing that there was more to come in the saga of Jackman, Evans and the evil mastermind, Alistair Ashcroft. Each book in the series stands alone in a plot and a series of crimes but Ashcroft has been a menacing presence throughout the series.
So, with only a day to breathe, I started Book 10. It didn’t disappoint and from almost the end of the first chapter, I was absolutely engrossed, my heart in my mouth. Was another beloved character going to be killed off, as Ellis has done in some of her other books? Who would it be? How would Jackman and Evans eventually overcome Ashcroft’s evil plans which are, indeed, very, very twisty. Would they triumph without extensive damage to themselves or those they love—I don’t know whether there is another Jackman & Evans book, haven’t looked.
I never do spoilers so I won’t say what happens as the book progresses. If you like thrillers, this is a really good one but you should at least read Book 9 to get the context of this one. I have read most of the Jackman & Evans but truthfully I don’t remember most of the plots so I couldn’t remember the full extent of Ashcroft’s evilness. Still, if you haven’t ever read the series, I think reading Solace House first would give you enough info to set you up to enjoy River’s Edge although to get the full story, you should read the other books in the series :)

Just wonder why “puffed out his/her cheeks” is always used to describe frustration in Joy Ellis books.
Almost a comic relief

Followers of Jackman and Evans will be interested as they again confront Alistair Ashcroft, the nemesis of the entire team. A taut and tension filled plot makes this an "unputdownable" read. Joy Ellis books are always good--I read them as soon as they come out, but this one is superb with an intricate and complex plot that keeps the reader guessing but which makes complete sense when all is explained.
This is not a book to read as a one off. It does not give away much about the preceding books, but it is better understood if they are read first. And, Joy Ellis always supplies a mystery worth reading, so it will be time well spent.

This is the best of Joy Ellis’ excellent books. The characters are all three dimensional and the suspense is expertly paced.
