After reading the first book, I quickly bought the second and jumped right in to see what would happen next. The first book had some good twists and I was eager to see how those played out in the second where the two main heroes are fighting different battles. Koren is struggling to find out why he is a jinx and come to terms with his true identity. Adriana is learning quickly how politics can be very completed and even the best thought out plans sometimes require great sacrifice. This story set in a medieval setting is a fun read that has you quickly wanting to find out what happens next.

4.0 out of 5 starsGreat story, but way too long

The story of Koren and Ariana is great. By itself, it flows smoothly. The injection of other stories like Kyle just makes the story longer and more complicated. Then again, the author has a great legacy behind and this reviewer just has “reviews” behind him.
Still: I’m hooked and moving to the third book.

This book surprised me a little in a good way. There is a lot more character development of all the other people in the book. There are storylines that follow the important characters as the book develops. The story is fast paced enough to keep you reading but with more detail. The suspense really starts to build as Koren begins to learn the truth. There are a lot of plot twists that were totally unexpected. The various storylines begin to converge and leave you begging for the next book!

This felt like the Empire Strikes Back, which I guess should be there goal of all sequels. With all the meandering back and forth, realizations of things, and advancement of characters.
I realized this book and the precedent I've also reminded me of Eddings' Belgariad and the movie Dragonslayer, which further underscores how this author is able to convince there's of greatness into his own story.
Congratulations. My one concern is that this is now going to be like the Wheel of Time, in that there is so much to tie up, and only one book in which to do it. I suspect the next book will be fun, but overwhelming, to read.

I don't know why this book is getting so much hate, thee story was slow, agreed, but that helped me understand thee politics of the war better. All i wwnted was for Koren to find oit he was a wizard aad then the action would immediatly start there. There are a lot of grammer an spelling errors but some of the best and most intresting books I have read have those, and this series is one I want to finish

Skim worthy. The story is decent, but is quite slow. Simple and straightforward. If food, it would be fast food.

5.0 out of 5 starsReally great new fantasy!

There is some pretty average fantasy out there with New York publishers pushing huge sales that can't match the quality of this series. I can't stop reading and am only annoyed by the chapters that don't follow the protagonist, as his discovery of magic is so engrossing. Do yourself a favor and purchase this novel.
