About this item

Nola Trenholm is hopeful for a fresh start in the Big Easy but must deal with ghosts from her past—as well as new ones—in this first book in a spin-off series of Karen White's New York Times best-selling Tradd Street novels.

After a difficult detour on her road to adulthood, Nola Trenholm is looking to begin anew in New Orleans, and what better way to start her future than with her first house? But the historic fixer-upper she buys comes with even more work than she anticipated when the house’s previous occupants don’t seem to be ready to depart.

Although she can’t communicate with ghosts like her stepmother can, luckily Nola knows someone in New Orleans who is able to—even if he’s the last person on earth she wants anything to do with ever again. Beau Ryan comes with his own dark past—a past that involves the disappearance of his sister and parents during Hurricane Katrina—and he’s connected to the unsolved murder of a woman who once lived in the old Creole cottage Nola is determined to make her own...whether the resident restless spirits agree or not.

Spending time in New Orleans and knowing of the Spirits that roam there it was exciting to see the connections and the story of how families deal with them! The architecture references were also interesting. Loved the book!

I loved series The House on Tradd Street. I loved the series house on trade Street I cherished that series until the last book which I know the author wasn’t happy about writing and it showed and so I put the series away. And then I heard about a royal Street novel. I love stories about New Orleans and I loved the character of Nola. So I gave it a chance this was like coming home. This is like reading a book that will stay with you for your entire life. Nolan went through a lot and we find her now in New Orleans. Karen White has develops some of the most amazing characters and not all of them human. Jolene has got to be one of the most classic characters I have ever read. Everybody needs a Jolene in their lives. She is the quintessential, southern woman, who exemplifies just the very best of humanity, Grace, and class. It is an enthralling story and it brings the old characters back and introduces new characters. It is simply a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book for Lovers of New Orleans

A travelogue through the Crescent City including food, house preservation and ghosts abound in this novel by Karen White. An true southern gal who is capable of doing everything one can imagine and is so willing to take care of her roommate is adorable with her 150 piece china setting except for her unbelievable driving skill and always with a southern phase that escapes from her mouth the moment she speaks. Her roommate has returned to New Orleans to show her independence from her parents and starts by finding a house that “sought her out” and needs her knowledge of preservation. But the house appears to have ghosts—a former tenant who was murdered. A fun book to read with just the right amount of tension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I'd hoped for!

As a big fan of Karen White's Tradd Street series, I had high hopes for its sequel series set in The Big Easy. The Shop on Royal Street did not disappoint!! We catch up with Nola a few years after Mellie and her dad, Jack's series concludes, and find that the teen we knew before has grown into a young woman, and is striking out on her own after facing some personal demons. She's ready to rebuild her life, and has returned to her birthplace to do just that.

If you loved Mellie's story, you'll love this, too. There are ghosts and mysteries aplenty, romantic entanglements, a spunky and loveable Southern-fried BFF, and the New Orleans setting is brimming over as a character in its own right. The story reaches a satisfying conclusion, and then the jaw-dropping final scene will leave you wanting the next installment PDQ. As with all of White's books, it is well written and polished. Highly recommend- but I would definitely read the Tradd Series first, if possible to avoid Mellie spoilers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. All the flavor of New Orleans, just what I wanted. Not too scary ghost story. Really more of a mystery. Not too much romance, but some.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Past is Always There

This book finds Nola in The Big East trying to grow up. Her past few years of college find her struggling with her past and trying to live in the present with an old house she wants to save from the destruction crew. But, it's more than a house. It's also home to ghosts that bring back the past for Beau (her love that she can't have) he, too, has a past that is resurfacing as well. Most of the characters have a past that is showing itself in the present. It's a good book and I have to start of the second book as soon as I can. And, once read this book, you will know what I mean

I'm a big fan of this author. Her books are a great blend of ghosts, mystery, humor, family and love. In this book Nolan has reached the point in heritage when she wants to grow up and be on her own. Her relationship with Beau is still confusing to her, but. I secretly hope they will get it together. Love the addition of new characters. Can't wait for a continuation.

My Thoughts:

When Nola buys the old house that she has been eyeing, we are swept up into the world of New Orleans and friends of the past and the present. The Shop on Royal Street takes the reader into the mysteries of the spirit world, even for those who are denying their presence.

Lost family members are showing themselves through strange events and objects that reveal much about the people who have gone on to the beyond.

Love and the spirit world mesh together in this story, and as more and more is explained by those who know some secrets, we finally realize what happened to those who have left this world for another. An intriguing tale that kept me turning pages, this one earned 4.5 stars.
