About this item

It was 1953, the Korean War in full throttle, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who, at the pinnacle of his career, was inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea, creating a death-defying bond. Although, over the next half century, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows, that bond would endure.

Through unpublished letters, unit diaries, declassified military records, manuscripts, and new and illuminating interviews, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect. Now, author Adam Lazaraus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends' lives—as singular individuals, inspiring patriots, and eventually, however improbable, profoundly close friends.

Certainly for those of us who grew up in the 1950s and 60s, the heroics of Ted Williams and John Glenn are etched forever in our memories. They were two American heroes of the first order with little competition even decades after their deaths.

The author’s detailed descriptions of their personalities, divergent as they were, and soaring talents go well beyond what most readers are probably familiar with. Their opposing political stances never seemed to get in the way of a lasting friendship based on respect and commitment to serving their country. This is a book not just for baseball or aerospace fans or those who love to read high-quality military history. This is a book we can all take to heart, especially in these increasingly challenging and fractious times.

A good read. The military jargon (names of planes, units, etc) was confusing. The coverage of their later years was more interesting than I had expected. There was no coverage of the estates they left after death.

I thought the subject matter was very good. It was an amazing relationship that 2 men who were arguably the best at what they did. So different yet so much alike.

Did not think much of the writers ability to write- story was hard to follow at times, skipped around a lot. You really had to think about where the story was going and often times had a hard time keeping up with character because a name rather than use of a pronoun would have been easier to follow.

There are some biographies that only draw information from previous ones. This author will have none of that. He researches on his own before committing to print.
I can't get enough of Theodore Samuel Williams and had known or cared little about John Glenn but most of the time I do not skip over the parts that pertain to Senator Glenn alone since the author has revealed things I was too lazy to learn before getting this book.
If you like Teddy Ballgame you need this book. If you like Old Magnet Butt too you will be twice as pleased.

This is a great book about very different men bonding together in the heat of combat. Williams a great ball player but a very flawed Person in his personal life and John Glenn whose personal and professional reputation was impeccable.
