About this item

It was 1953, the Korean War in full throttle, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who, at the pinnacle of his career, was inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea, creating a death-defying bond. Although, over the next half century, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows, that bond would endure.

Through unpublished letters, unit diaries, declassified military records, manuscripts, and new and illuminating interviews, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect. Now, author Adam Lazaraus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends' lives—as singular individuals, inspiring patriots, and eventually, however improbable, profoundly close friends.

This is a great book about very different men bonding together in the heat of combat. Williams a great ball player but a very flawed Person in his personal life and John Glenn whose personal and professional reputation was impeccable.

Certainly for those of us who grew up in the 1950s and 60s, the heroics of Ted Williams and John Glenn are etched forever in our memories. They were two American heroes of the first order with little competition even decades after their deaths.

The author’s detailed descriptions of their personalities, divergent as they were, and soaring talents go well beyond what most readers are probably familiar with. Their opposing political stances never seemed to get in the way of a lasting friendship based on respect and commitment to serving their country. This is a book not just for baseball or aerospace fans or those who love to read high-quality military history. This is a book we can all take to heart, especially in these increasingly challenging and fractious times.

I liked the story line but had trouble getting into it. Found it slow and repetitive.

A good read. The military jargon (names of planes, units, etc) was confusing. The coverage of their later years was more interesting than I had expected. There was no coverage of the estates they left after death.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written tale of the unlikely friendship of two American heroes — I recommend it highly

I just finished “Wingman” by Adam Lazarus, the story of the lives and friendship of an American Hero, John Glenn and an all time Baseball Great, Ted Williams.
Their friendship was forged by their time as jet fighter pilots in Korea and lasted until Williams’ death. This book has everything — war stories, politics, space, sports — even a poem (sonnet by Glenn) and will, in my judgement, hold the attention of even those with no interest in baseball. It is the history of a friendship of two highly district individuals, both stars in their own universes, highly competitive, each with a flair for the dramatic, with highly different political views — yet close friends for years, each admiring the other.

I was so taken with the book that, over rearing the early chapters in a hardcover book, I also bought the Kindle version so that I could read it wherever i was on my my tablet.
