About this item

In a world overrun by an unprecedented outbreak, two young women find themselves on opposite sides of the struggle for survival.

Saff, a determined new doctor in the first year of her internship, had clawed her way out of a tumultuous past, only to be dragged back into it when the zombie outbreak hits. Forced to join her estranged father and his band of raiders, she's confronted with the harsh reality that desperation can make monsters out of anyone—even her.

Maddie, on the other hand, lived a surprisingly easy life after the zombies first appeared, safe behind the walls of the community at her parent's lake house. That is until they're attacked, and she's ripped away from everything she's known. Now, she'll do anything to make it back to her family.

And when Saff's father dies, she finally has the chance she's been waiting for. The chance to escape. But only if she can steal the medication she desperately needs and survive long enough to get to safety.

With both girls fighting their way to stay alive day by day, in a world where every circumstance is against them, they realize that maybe traveling together can help them both get what they need.

But Maddie doesn't know Saff's secret. She doesn't know where she came from—what she was. And Saff will do anything, especially lie, to get the medication she needs.

The absolute last thing she needs is to fall for some smart-ass rich girl who will get in the way of that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made it to my top 10!!

Wow! What a great book! This has made it into my top 10 for sure! I stayed up til 4 in the morning, simply unable to put it down. It’s a slow but intriguing build up to an intense explosion of raw emotion and love. It’s well written and the story is very well thought out. Fantastic characters and great dialogue. I laughed out loud and I full on bawled near the end but….

..Spoiler Alert..

It ends very well and I didn’t have to toss my phone across the room in a fit of outrage and dismay. Thank you for that Ms. Maser!
If Abby Craden or Angela Dawe narrated this book for audible, It would be a treasure! 100% recommend!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers Lesbian Romance and Zombie Apocalypse Adventure
Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024
Very entertaining and a page turner. For a zombie setting, the leads as a blind optimist and an asthmatic, doctor bad ass was a fresh take for me. I thought the romance was structured well and I definitely enjoyed their grumpy/cheery relationship dynamic. I believed their love, which is difficult to achieve for some authors. The spicy scenes were short but well written. Other aspects were pretty typical: its the humans, not the zombies who are the real danger/ without government tons of people are evil and murderous. That perspective is super played out at this point and probably not as realistic as everyone seems to think. Humans tend to help and support each other during catastrophes. I'd like to see some zombie stories/media not rely on that theme to drive the action. I also think the morality was pretty simplistic, even within that aspect- like Maddie never questions her perspective or acknowledges how unbelievably lucky her rich family was. She never considers what it would have been like if they had had to scrape by and what they might have done to survive. But this isn't written to be literarure and it delivers what it promises, an entertaining zombie apocalypse, lesbian romance :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed Romance
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2024
I generally don't go for action-oriented books or zombie books, but I have to say that "Hearing Red" really won me over. I really liked the slowburn of Saff and Maddie, and I really liked the idea of seeing how people with a disability would survive a situation like this.

This book was very well-written, and Nicole Maser absolutely knows how to build tension, let me tell you! I loved her imaginative descriptions of what life would look like post-apocalypse, and her take on how society would reform. I also loved how sweet and caring the romance here is. I felt every pain, every worry, every nervousness, and every elation of the two main characters. They were adorable.

Def recommend this one, especially if you're looking to break out of the modern romance genre a little.

Solid storyline with good character development. The writing/editing is a little underwhelming but the story makes up for it. Definitely worth a read especially if you are looking for a sapphic story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I never wanted this book to end.

I was looking for a decent sapphic book to read that was available on kindle unlimited and my standards weren’t entirely high, I just wanted something to pick up and browse before bed. The rave reviews and premise of this book had me intrigued so I gave it a shot. To say that it blew all of my expectations out of the water and had me hooked by the first chapter would be an understatement. I absolutely devoured this story. I never wanted it to end and at the same time couldn’t bring myself to put it down. The characters were so amazingly crafted and voiced that both perspectives were equally riveting and never felt confusing or bland. The pacing was expertly weaved with all of the perfect amounts of action, suspense and vulnerability that it never felt rushed or boring. Every part of the relationship between the two protagonists was written to absolute perfection. I could go on and on. If there was a way to will a sequel into existence I would do it just for a few more chapters with these characters. Seriously. Just read this book.

I have not read a book that has made me blush, giggle and cry in a long time. And this book made me feel all types of feelings! Amazingly written, the story line held my interest the entire time. The slow burn was PERFECT! Absolutely obsessed with Saff and Maddie, I can’t wait to check out more books by this author. This is definitely a book that’ll I’ll be in a book slump over because it’ll be hard to find something that can top this amazing story. Read this book, you won’t regret it! 10000/10 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars An original, engaging and gripping read

Even though there were a few grammatical errors (Him and X ; Her and X, -when he and she should be used) they weren't frequent and even though that normally would pull me out of the story I was instead captured by the story line. Better editing will resolve this in the future.

The two primary characters, Saff, an asthmatic emotionally wounded woman who trusts absolutely no one and Maddie, a woman who is blind and also stubborn who sees the best in people and most situations meet under frightening circumstances in a city overrun with "the infected" (zombies), and raiders, people who take what they want by whatever means necessary and even unnecessary. Maddie convinces Saff to help get her to a safe community where she hopes to find her parents and brother by explaining that they should have the asthma medication Saff needs.
What then follows is an emotional and physical journey that is terrifying but not devoid of hope. This is a thrilling story that will have you holding your breath but reading well into the night.
