About this item

From the author of Last Horizons, Peter Hathaway Capstick now presents Death in a Lonely Land, a second volume of his hunting, fishing, and shooting adventures on five continents—stories collected from such magazines as Outdoor Life, NRA’s American Hunter, Guns & Ammo, and Petersen’s Hunting.

The stockbroker-turned-outdoorsman recalls his days as an African pro hunter in “The Killer Baboons of Vlackfontein.” “Four Fangs in a Treetop” records a foray into British Honduras for the jaguar, “a gold-dappled teardrop of motion.” Capstick narrowly escapes the Yellow Beard, Central America’s deadly tree-climbing snake, and cows “The Black Death” (Cape buffalo) in the kind of article that makes this author “the guru of American hunting fans” (New York Newsday). On Brazil’s forsaken Marajo Island, he bags the pugnacious red buffalo, which has the “temperament of a constipated Sumo wrestler and the tenacity of an IRS man.”

The author discusses 12- and 20-gauge shotgun loads; recalls the pleasures of “biltong” (African beef jerky); describes the irresistible homemade lures of snook fishing expert John Gorbatch; and kills a genteel take of Atlantic salmon with the brilliantly simple tube fly.

Death in a Lonely Land is another collector’s item by a writer who “keeps the tradition of great safari adventure alive in each of his books” (African Expedition Gazette).

Great stories, even if you don’t hunt.

Typical Capstick, that is to say if you liked his other books you will like this one too. Some of the chapters will cause some readers to fall asleep, while others are hard action, Capstick style. All are well written and what Chapters, if any, that put you to sleep depends on the interests of the reader. There is a little something for everyone in this book, something I think Capstick designed into this read. I particularly enjoyed the several big Cat hunts taking place at night and at close (shotgun) ranges. The book is worth its price,in any case.

I was delighted to find this book available in Kindle format, since my paperback copy was more than 20 years old and falling apart.

Peter Capstick wrote with a style that was truly unique. He had a marvelous sense of humor, much of it self-deprecating. No one could describe a scene better, his similes and metaphors literally painting landscapes in your head. I own all of his books as well as all of the reprints of classics by other hunter/authors which are in The Peter Capstick Library. And now I am adding them to my Kindle so I can enjoy them no matter where I go.

The second collection of Peter Hathaway Capstick’s early magazine articles felt a bit weaker than Lost Horizons, its predecessor. Perhaps he should have left a few from each book in his files and brought out one volume comprising his best. I have read a lot of outdoor magazine articles in my 70 plus years and I think I can tell the genuine from fact mixed with fiction. Too often Capstick and his companions had what felt like credibility-stretching narrow escapes. Another problem was was that a few tales had already appeared in other books Some of the best stories in both books were about the adventures of other hunters and explorers. Three stars but not essential unless you want everything PHC wrote.
