About this item

A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about . . . farming????

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I'm stuck in his body.

Out in the middle of nowhere, I've managed to escape a life of cultivation and politics. Until now, that is. I guess it was inevitable they caught up with me eventually. I haven't exactly been subtle. You know, what with the talking animals performing heroics all over the Azure Hills and Xiulan constantly calling me a Hidden Master.

A part of me wants to run away again. The memory of my death still haunts my dreams. But this is my home now. And I'll be damned if I give it up without a fight.

I mean, all I have to do is learn how to navigate xianxia politics and train for battle while simultaneously running my farm and uncovering an ancient cataclysm that apparently destroyed the Azure Hills back in the day.

Meanwhile, I'm about to be a father . . . Man, I'm kinda screwed, aren't I? At least I can call in the cavalry—ahem, poultry—to help.

The fourth volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 20 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

5.0 out of 5 stars funny, poignant, and oddly captivating

This series has dragged me in and held my attention across four books and several re-readings now. The balance between comedic hilarity, character building, and actual serious plot lines is effortless to follow. More to the point, the main characters are genuinely likeable, and the story progression is not only engaging, but also thought provoking.

As much as I enjoy the action in these stories, not to mention the fluid writer's voice, I think the best part is the character development, followed closely by the humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read

Funny, relaxed, and layered, this series is a balm for the soul. The characters, relationships, humor, and philosophy are well written and interesting.
The best slice-of-life I have found. In part because the characters strive to avoid xianxia b.s.
    Strongly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Chicken 4: - sometimes I loved it, sometimes I was waiting for something to happen

At times, nothing happened. I kept waiting for something to happen. At times, I did not know what was going on, or the meaning of a particular page or the intent of a character. (is the character a good guy or a bad guy?) A number of times, I was confused. AND YET, I can't wait for the next book. I am interested in these characters, in spite of some of my confusion regarding the author's intent/meaning. I love the friendships and the building of a community. And I believe I see pieces aligning for an upcoming battle (?). I am waiting to see if the monkey finds his tribe and brings them into the fold. (I hope so)

I have not enjoyed a series of books as much as these in a long time. Every character is well developed. The world is beautiful and described magnificently. And the story is a wild ride spanning the complete emotional range. I could not recommend this series more highly.

I have enjoyed the previous three books. Book four was a balm to the soul. After so much turmoil and chaos in the first three. We finally see Jin able to relax and enjoy Fa Ram and his family. We get to catch up with other missed characters and learn more about the world at large. We get to learn more about the history of the Azure Hills . Well worth the read and I can't wait to read the next book. Well done.

A masterfully told story! I was hooked, from the first paragraph of the first book, all through the last words of this fourth book. I am positively drooling for more! I haven't done much besides devour this series in the past week. For a beginning author, I am blown away! No bland, boring plot, 2D characters, or tedious exposition. Every scene, description, line of dialogue is precisely what it should be...addictive and perfect! The characters are so real to me, I CARE about them. I feel with them. Rarely have I read a series that has me giggling, laughing, crying, and so furious my heart starts pounding... Please, do yourself a great favor and dive into this enchanting series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely enjoyable

This fourth in the series is a book I was looking forward to ever since I finished the third. I was certainly not disappointed. It traverses the full spectrum of emotions as it tells of triumphs and failures, of birth and death as well as even rebirth with Teilan, the earth spirit, as the land is healed and she is reborn. I recommend highly the entire series. It will make you laugh out loud as well as tear up at other times. Read it and enjoy.
