About this item

Some doors are locked for a reason . . .

While eleven-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework, she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement.

Until the day the police arrived at their front door.

Decades later, Nora's father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way.

Then Nora discovers one of her young female patients has been murdered. In the same unique and horrific manner that her father used to kill his victims.

Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But she's not a killer like her father. The police can't pin anything on her.

As long as they don't look in her basement.

Ok so, no spoilers here, but these are my thoughts.

    1) the book is written in first person, it’s like you’re reading a journal the entire time which naturally helps you enter the mind of the narrator and empathize. I LOVE books written this way, so this may be somewhat subjective to me.

    2) you’re getting the perspective of multiple socio/psychopaths and even feeling empathy towards them, which is a twist because in our society we always associate sociopathy with psychopathy, which isn’t the case always. Not all sociopaths are killers/serial killers.

    3) there was a little romance but by no means is this erotic. I notice some thriller stories having so much sexual stuff in them that it’s hard to focus on the “thrill” and mystery. The author didn’t try to do all genres in one book - she knew what she wanted to write and stayed 100% in that lane, which made for a very pleasant and easy on the eyes reading experience.

    4) loved the flashbacks to before everything happened - would’ve liked a little more between Nora and her dad back then, but doesn’t affect the quality of the story whatsoever.

    5) the mystery part? INSANE. I had all of my ducks in a row thinking I knew who did what the entire time, and I was as wrong as 5+5=11. I pride myself in guessing the culprit… not here. Got it super wrong and was pleasantly shocked and horrified.

I binged this in three hours, and I NEVER do that. I just downloaded allllllllll her other books. Can’t wait to see more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy read, short chapters. But wanted more

I absolutely loved "The Locked Door" by Frieda McFadden! This book kept me hooked from start to finish. While some readers have criticized it for being repetitive or lacking in character development for Nora, I completely disagree. Every detail, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in the narrative. Even something as so small, like how Nora likes to drink her coffee provides a deeper understanding of her character. These small details give insight into her personality and hint at her similarities with her father, a notorious serial killer.

I found Nora to be a fascinating character. Yes, she was cold and distant, and she didn't show a lot of emotions, but this portrayal was intentional and effective. It highlighted her potential psychopathic traits while distinguishing her from her father. The questioning around whether she is like her father or not added a thrilling layer to the story.

The alternating timelines between the present and the past were nice to read , offering a view of Nora's character and her relationship with her father before his capture. However, I do wish there was more exploration of Nora's childhood. There were some gaps that left me wanting more about her early years.

My one thing was that it felt like it ended too abruptly. Yes, we all want a happy ending, but we are reading about possible suspects and everything that has happened so far and BAM. We get our answer so quickly. Too quickly. That whole scene doesn’t last long and left me wanting more.

Overall, this book is an easy read with short chapters that make it hard to put down. If you're looking for an engaging and enjoyable read with a plot twist at the end, I highly recommend "The Locked Door."

Plot line is up and down with a buildup and a letdown . Could’ve been better but still an easy read that was suspenseful.

I enjoyed this book. Slightly predictable but the story still flowed well and the conclusion was done well. Not as good as ‘Never Lie’ but still worth a read.

The Locked Door is a lightening fast read. The premise hooked me from the start, and the twists and turns keep up the intrigue until the end.

Ok. The writing is a little basic. It is not trying to be insightful or literary. It is just about the mystery, which is very well constructed.
