About this item

A Russian plot to seize the Panama Canal plunges President Jack Ryan into a desperate fight for his life in the latest entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

For a century, the Panama Canal has served as the path between the seas. Control of this vital waterway is the difference between free trade and chaos in world markets.

So when Panamanian President Rafael Botero asks for a show of support against the socialist opposition, his old friend President Jack Ryan can’t turn down an invitation to visit the country, but what seems like an ordinary opportunity to preach the values of democracy quickly turns into a nightmare when a full-blown coup d’état erupts.

President Ryan and his Secret Service team are cut off and out of communication. In Washington, the Vice President is coordinating a military response, but there's still one more obstacle.

One of the main forces behind the coup is the ruthless criminal organization known as the Camarilla. They’ve had their tentacles deep inside the plot to overthrow the government. All of their hard work has just presented them with an unexpected opportunity they can’t resist—the chance to kill President Jack Ryan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cameron's Best So Far

Clancy novels are classics and his successors are like children and grandchildren. Cameron is a grandchild of sorts, true to his genetics with the characters, personalities , pace and outcome. On the other hand, his Texas background marks him as a frontiers man . His new characters are gunfight ers making the land safer against evil forces. He doesn't belabor both sides of the moral issues, so justice is more black and white and less gray. To his credit, he doesn't dwell on minutiae and the story moves on at a pace that grips the reader. A fun read and looking forward to the next one. Way to go grandson!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great build up but quick ending

I was really looking forward to this book like all the others. It started off great and really was building towards a fantastic finish but then it was like the author decided he had other things to do and just quickly finished up the book. There was so much more that could have been with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, just too short.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Reminded me of the original Jack Ryan stories except that it was too short. I wish the author had fleshed it out a bit more similar to Clancy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unwavering government

Mark Cameron's "Command and Control" draws the reader into his world from the very beginning. The story begins with President Ryan being unable to be contacted and government’s top officials being called into an emergency room. Right from the start, it gives us a sense of urgency that makes us think that World War III is about to break out. Why has America fallen into such an emergency? Cameron makes us feel uneasy just by depicting the chaos of Ryan administration officials rushing to the emergency room. The story then goes back to an event four days earlier that may have been the underlying cause of this chaos.

Four days ago, Adam Yao, a frequent character in the Ryan series, was conducting an operation in Venezuela in pursuit of the mastermind behind a random terrorist attack that was shocking the world. During the operation, Adam's team discovers that his previously unknown sister is the source of all evil. Campus members will be sent to reinforce Adam's team. This time, two new members will join the campus members, and this will also be their practical training. One of the two newcomers is Chilly, who previously helped to thwart the kidnapping of Mrs. Ryan, and the other is the granddaughter of the veteran spies Mr. and Mrs. Cobb, who Clark knows well and who appeared in previous episodes.

Living in Japan, we don't hear much about the political situation in Latin America, but it seems that there are some people who do not want American influence to grow stronger. Panama's economic adviser was plotting a coup to encourage Panamanians to become more independent. In this social climate, the sister of the mastermind of the aforementioned terrorist attack was persuading a Panamanian economic adviser to carry out simultaneous bombings in Panama. She planned to use the remnants of the mercenary group involved in the kidnapping of the First Lady to cause political unrest in Latin America.

Ryan is asked by the Panamanian President to demonstrate to the Panamanian people America's unchanging and deep ties to their country, and despite strong opposition from Ryan’s senior administration officials, Ryan promises to stop in Panama before the summit. Ryan is the President who is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good, even when he knows the risks. The second half of the book is devoted to the escape of Ryan and his companion, Foley, who are unexpectedly caught up in a terrorist bombing. Russia is looking for an opportunity to intervene, while the United States tries to prevent it. The vice president, who is entrusted with Ryan's absence, is hesitant to back down if his claims are not accepted in negotiations with Russia, which gives a sense of trust. This book does not highlight the achievements of campus members. I'm looking forward to seeing what two newcomers of the Campus do next.

IT NEVER FAILS WITH A JACK RYAN THRILLER: I’M TOO CLOSE TO THE END TO PUT IT DOWN EVEN THOUGH IT’S PAST MY NORAL BEDTIME — I WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY. “COMMAND AND CONTROL” WAS NO EXCEPTION AND I’M SURE THE SAME WILL BE TRUE WITH “ACT OF DEFIANCE”, WHICH I’M DOWNLOADING FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!
