About this item

When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he's been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he'll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines blur between victim, abuser, and protector.

Personal tragedy has sent former police officer Ben Packard back to the small Minnesota town of Sandy Lake in search of a fresh start. Now a sheriff's deputy, Packard is leading the investigation into the missing teens, motivated by a family connection. As clues dry up and time runs out to save them, Packard is forced to reveal his own secrets and dig deep to uncover the dark past of the place he now calls home.

Unrelentingly suspenseful and written with a piercing gaze into the dark depths of the human soul, this thriller introduces listeners to a complicated new hero and forces us to consider the true nature of evil.

Packard does not disappoint in magnetism and the town has plenty of interesting people. Good storytelling and I am looking forward to getting to know the town and their troubles left on Packard’s doorstep.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Main Character and Creepy Bad Guy

I've been back and forth about my thoughts on this book. While I love the main character Ben Packard and I'm eager to learn more about the mystery surrounding his past, I felt that the story moved a little slow for my liking. I found I was sorta forcing myself to read, in hopes of getting to something climactic. There were absolute creepy and disturbing instances in the book that kept me interested but pieces where it felt like the story was getting a little sidetracked. With that being said, it was still a good story and Ben makes me want to keep reading. I'm eager to start the next book and see what else awaits the acting sheriff.

3.0 out of 5 stars good read

The book is well written and easy to read. The first bit hooks you but then it will almost lose you. The middle is slow, so very slow. If you push through it though, the ending makes it worth the read. The characters are great and the writer helps you easily create an image of them in your head. If it wasn’t for the slow middle it would easily get a 4-5 star review from me.

Go this because I read his other novel. Couldn’t put it down. Great characters and story kept me on the edge of my seat.

Dual POV’s in this dark and disturbing thriller, I loved the beginning! It starts off fast paced and had me immediately hooked. It tapered off after the 1st 50 pages and of course picked back up toward the end. This is Joshua Moehling’s debut novel making this the 1st book in the Ben Packard series so I’m looking forward to reading more.

This was a debut book from a new author. It's a three series book set. I can't hardly wait to read the other two books! The main character is my favorite....he is a gay police officer with a great sense of humor. I loved this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner From The Start!

The first chapter started off with a bang (literally) and held me captive from the start! You will know what I mean when you read this page turner!

Jesse and Jenny break into Emmett Burr's home looking for prescription drugs. Jesse is now the dealer at the high school and has a lead to get the most wanted prescription drugs. Emmett hears people in his home during the middle of the night, and there is no way they are getting away with robbing him again!

When Jenny's mom reports her missing, sheriff deputy Ben Packard takes over the case looking for the teens. Ben has recently moved back to Sandy Lake for a fresh start.

If Sandy Lake sounds like a safe, quiet place to live, think again because others have gone missing in this town. Soooooo many secrets….

This was my first read by Joshua Moehling and I can't wait to read more of the Ben Packard saga!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning to what I hope is a series!

I was torn between a four and five for this book. I normally only review books that are five star for me and I try to stick to debut authors or authors that I don’t think are getting the attention their book deserves.
With that said, I really enjoyed this book. It apparently is a debut and the author will be a go to author for me. Hopefully in a series with the same main character.
The only complaint I had, and this was author’s choice, I never felt like the main character was rushing to solve the crime. I kept thinking, “someone is missing! Not a time to shop for a new dog or to go out to dinner with a friend. ????‍♀️I never felt a sense of urgency.
Still with that said, I really enjoyed this book. The bad guys were creepy, the main character was someone I would like to spend more time with, and the author set up the next story nicely with the ending of this one an actual ending.
So actually four and a half stars and I’ll be back.
