About this item

A simple, no-stress guide to managing money—free of the toxic messages and shame baked into traditional personal finance advice.

Track every dollar you spend. Check your account balances once a week. Always pay off your credit card bill in full. Make a budget—and stick to it. These are just a few of the edicts you'll find in virtually every personal finance book. But this kind of rigid, one-size-fits-all advice—usually written for and by wealthy white men (and a few women) with little perspective on the money struggles that many people face—is unrealistic, and only creates stress and shame.

As a financial journalist and educator, Dana Miranda is on a mission to liberate listeners from budget culture: the damaging set of beliefs around money that rely on restriction, shame, and greed—much like diet culture does for food and bodies. In this long-overdue alternative to traditional budgeting advice, Miranda offers a new approach that makes money easy for everyone, regardless of the numbers in their bank account.

Full of counterintuitive advice—like how to use debt to support your life goals, how to plan for retirement without a 401K, and how to take advantage of resources that exist to support those left behind by the forces of capitalism—You Don’t Need a Budget will empower listeners to get money off their mind and live the lives they want.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of Theories

This book offers a lot of good socio-economic theories about money and how as a society we've layered judgmental labels on people's relationships with money (and lack of) and debt.
However, I wasn't interested in so much detail about that.
I was hoping for more concise detail on how to have a comfortable and emotion-free relationship with spending and debt so I can feel in control of my finances without struggling with a budget that never seemed to work for me.
I did appreciate the author's point that when her income increased, it appeared she was managing money better, but she knew that having more money played a big part.
She also offered good suggestions about creative thinking, and solutions on increasing abundance without necessarily increasing income.

You don't need to be restrictive with your finances to live the life you want. Dana Miranda's refreshing guide helps us break free from toxic budget culture by shifting both our mindset and practices, like not thinking about earning an income, but creating resources, to not needing an emergency fund to creating a comfort fund. 5.0 out of 5 stars Allow this one to sink in.

If revamping your finances is one of your resolutions for the new year, read this book before you get out the spreadsheets and file folders. Read it, let it sink in, maybe read it again. It'll help you give yourself some grace and remind you of your value before you get into the dollars and cents of getting organized. Also in the interest of transparency I wrote a blurb for this book. I have been thinking about it (the book) ever since!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable, Important Book

I loved this book. You Don’t Need A Budget is a financial wake-up call wrapped in empowering, no-nonsense wisdom. Miranda dismantles traditional budgeting myths that have always made me feel terrible about myself. She writes with clarity and compassion, offering practical tools that actually apply to real people’s lives in all their complexity. (Bad at math? Inconsistent income? Neurodivergent? This book is for everyone.) Miranda’s approach is refreshingly human—rejecting shame and embracing flexibility—making it a must-read for anyone tired of one-size-fits-all financial advice. It’s not just a guide; it’s a mindset shift. Highly recommend!
