About this item

Remarkable new discoveries affirm the octopus as one of nature’s most intelligent and complex animals.

This new book—written by the beloved author of the international best seller The Soul of an Octopus and enhanced with vivid National Geographic photography—brings us closer than ever to these elusive creatures.

The companion to the highly anticipated National Geographic television special, this beautifully illustrated book explores the alluring underwater world of the octopus—a creature that resembles an alien lifeform, but whose behavior has earned it a reputation as one of the most intelligent animals on the planet.

This magical journey into the world of the octopus will reveal how the large and capable brain of these creatures occupies their whole body–not just their heads—and they can actually adjust their genetic makeup to respond to the demands of the environment. It will allow listeners to watch them change shape and color in order to camouflage themselves more effectively than any other species. And it will divulge how octopus mothers give their all in order to bring forth a new generation.

With this offering, acclaimed author Sy Montgomery—known, thanks to her best-selling book, as the “octopus whisperer”—returns to the species she knows and loves, offering current and compassionate stories about the scientists on the front lines of octopus research and conservation.

For all animal lovers—and especially those drawn to this magical marine being—this will be a book to relish, for both its fascinating imagery and its charming storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone in the TV/Film industry filled me in on this and they are right...simply OUTSTANDING!!

In visiting with an individual in the TV/Film industry, we were discussing documentaries. He asked if I had ever seen the documentary on Prime called 'Secrets of the Octopus.' I had not yet, and he told me that it's one of the most outstanding documentaries he has ever seen and filmed by National Geographic, so you can only imagine how captivating the filming is...clarity, colors, content...in a league of its' own! When he shared information about the Octopus, I was captivated, and even more so after watching the three part series (known as Season 1). On Prime, I believe you pay $6.99 for Season 1 (three shows included in that price). It's worth every penny, and more. Spread the word because it's the most incredible thing I have ever watched. Octopus are very curious, and friendly to humans...you'll fall in love with them! They may look like science fiction, but it's a special being that has the most intriguing set of characteristics...stunning to see their level of intelligence, heart and capabilities. You'll love it! It was THAT good that I purchased the book to read more stories. This book is extremely well written. With captivating photos from National Geographic throughout the book, you will not be disappointed. It's a keeper!

What a marvel of a book. What a marvel of a creature. What a sadness that these miraculous animals live such brief lives. And what a thrill it would be to actually feel their exploratory touch. Loved thisbook.

One of best books written about octopuses is Sy Montgomery's 'Soul of an Octopus.' It's my personal favorite, and this follow-up does not disappoint. Such incredible creatures need an incredible storyteller to bring their magic alive on the page, and Sy is the master of it. I've always been fascinated by octopuses--because they are inherently fascinating--and I'm so glad that Sy Montgomery is here to write about them in such a fun and engaging way. Five stars all the way!
