About this item

"One of the great reporters of our time and probably the greatest biographer." (The Sunday Times, London)

From the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Power Broker and the Years of Lyndon Johnson series: an unprecedented gathering of vivid, candid, deeply revealing recollections about his experiences researching and writing his acclaimed books.

For the first time in audiobook form, Robert Caro gives us a glimpse into his own life and work in these evocatively written, personal pieces. He describes what it was like to interview the mighty Robert Moses and to begin discovering the extent of the political power Moses wielded; the combination of discouragement and exhilaration he felt confronting the vast holdings of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, Texas; his encounters with witnesses, including longtime residents wrenchingly displaced by the construction of Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway and Lady Bird Johnson acknowledging the beauty and influence of one of LBJ's mistresses. He gratefully remembers how, after years of working in solitude, he found a writers' community at the New York Public Library and details the ways he goes about planning and composing his books.

Caro recalls the moments at which he came to understand that he wanted to write not just about the men who wielded power, but about the people and the politics that were shaped by that power. And he talks about the importance to him of the writing itself, of how he tries to infuse it with a sense of place and mood to bring characters and situations to life on the page. Taken together, these reminiscences - some previously published, some written expressly for this book - bring into focus the passion, the wry self-deprecation, and the integrity with which this brilliant historian has always approached his work.

Although the author's speech delivery seems slow at first, you come to appreciate it because his prose is so dense you need time to digest it and like a really sumptuous meal, you savor every bite. Very interesting content into two powerful men. Three, if you count the author and I'm betting by the end you do.

Robert Caro is a legend and we're all hanging out for the next LBJ instalment. Now, standing in for a proper autobio, we get this collection of essays on how to survive, how to research, how to interview, how to structure, and how to write. Lovely from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not truly a book but inspired me to read his books

Some of it is repetitive because it’s kind of a complication of interviews and essays about his writing. But it’s much shorter than the books themselves and a great way to discover if you’ll get excited to read his books, as I did. The fact he takes interest in everyone no matter how much power they have or don’t and how he treats the very subject of power through histories that both changed society but are also really personal is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Working” if done right truly is a lot of a work.

The author takes great pains to describe his techniques to get the truth about the lives of powerful people in high positions accomplish almost impossible goals in their lifetimes. A writer must turn every page when researching his subject and invest as many hours as it takes to define the person who is his subject. I would recommend you invest some of your time one of his works as I did. Your won’t regret it.

In Caro's own voice, he tells the story of the deep research behind The Power Broker (Robert Moses) and the Lyndon Johnson books. To say that not many other biographers go to this level of detail is an understatement, and Caro's new book gives example after example of what one can uncover when you are willing to spend the years required to tell the full story. And if you haven't read the Moses or Johnson books, do so, OR at least read/listen to this new book and see what you've been missing.

He’s the best biographer extant, and a wonderful narrator. Fascinating to listen to him.

Best to watch Turn Every Page - has a lot of the same information in it or the interview Caro & Gottlieb did at NY Library about the film.
