About this item

Perry Z has a Magical Destiny.

Born to a Magical Fantasy Princess and a nine-to-five Supervillain in the most superhero riddled city in the world, Perry's never felt...adequate. He's got no talent for magic, and not a scrap of superpowers to his name.

When The System boots and unlocks his powers, it forces him to follow in his father's footsteps, but he'd rather take after his mother...

Maybe there's a way he can do both...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Detail

The characters are incredibly detailed, each with their own quirks. But each quirk has a reason and a history. Except for the mysteriously normal Brendon!

It repeatedly struck me as I read the book that it didn’t use idioms that shouldn’t exist. “Why are they called Hawaiian shirts?” “I dunno. I’m not a history teacher.” That is probably the most glaring anachronism and it is explained. I didn’t notice any language that shouldn’t be there and noticed several places where the language was adjusted to this world.

Amazing detail. Excellent characterization. Great humor. And a coherent overall story.

    Great book.

Considering that the style is YA I am very impressed with this book. The humor and narrative style was captivating and the nuts and bolts were engaging and fun. The characters have enough humanizing flaws to make them likable and the story kept taking wild and action packed turns.

Up there with DCC for me as far as quality goes, definitely worth a read.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing is the right level of serious and funny for my tastes. The protagonist has a lot of power, but isn't totally broken, the world building is inventive, and I can care about the people because there's some depth and complexity.

Macronomicon does it again! This is a "superhero" story with pragmatism, powers, magic, and mad science. With a healthy helping of humor and innuendo. It is set in a future where a magic/super apocalypse has made cities into bastions surrounded by dangerous wilderness. Enjoy the MC and his friends' shenanigans as they struggle and grow in the face of oddball adversity.

The world-building is a treat. The schemes are pleasingly twisty. Tropes employed in the story have been organically grown and don't taste like preservatives.

Battles show up frequently, but don't feel like they take over the book. Politics, poaching, and property damage all feature here. Combat has consequences that sometimes send the plot in new directions.

The characters are great fun. One of my favorites scenes has the MC's parents posing as youthful superheroes and utilizing a (somehow!) lighthearted black market auction as foreplay. The MC just shakes his head at them and carries on.

The last thing I want to mention is: powers. There are some interesting ones and a lot of interesting magic spells. The MC spends a notable portion of the book engineering odd magic rituals into repeatable push-the-button technology. If that tickles your fancy, I think you'll enjoy this book!

I was a little confused at first as to what I had got myself into when I started reading this fantastic book. But the more I read the better I liked where it was going. Although I still got confused every now and then, the great characters that are fun to hang out with make you keep turning the pages. Give it a chance, you won’t regret it.

I am loving this book. The audiobook was a masterclass in how audiobooks should be done. The world is interesting and the growth of the MC and his nemesis is fantastic. I have had genuine laughter while reading this book. I am buying the next 2 books and I am very excited to read them. I will gladly recommend this book to friends and family. There are some things that really did seem out of place, and I will write that below.

Some critique for the author, and possible spoiler Alert Below. Again, I like the book, these things below just kind of degraded the story for me.

I am not a fan of what you have done to Heather. She was cool, and I liked the possible match between her and the MC. I am very displeased with how, out of nowhere, she is into girls, and there is a weird triangle with her, the other tinker girl, and the MC. That entire dynamic is weird. The tinker girl sometimes just sits in the MC's lap? Heather is now this masculine working out, fighting machine... she is a completely different person. All of her talking and manurisms have changed. I would expect this from their slow friend... not the girl from the beginning of the book. Heather died, and now there is this fake replacement. It feels like another author wrote some of this book. It feels like a promise was broken.

I am holding out hope for the actual growth of these characters... but I honestly think the author dropped the ball on Heather, this weird triangle love thing, and this lap thing.

So let me start off by saying I’m not really great at reviews. I was hesitant to try this book because superheroes.

However it was written by the great Macronomicon and I have enjoyed his other books in the past.

Needless to say this first book in the series was an absolute blast. Besides the character development and world building that I think every decent book should have, this book in particular was funny and chaotic. The right mix of misunderstandings, low-brow humor, didn’t see that coming, absolutely saw that coming, and mayhem. Also there is magic, numbers go up, guns go brrr, science, mad science, cyberpunk, awkward encounters, magical people, world ending eldritch beings, etc…..

I have also never had to decode binary before while reading a book. So that was fun. Pro tip don’t ignore it.

Anyways I liked it, and while it’s true that I like everything, I liked this one a lot.

    Check it out!
