About this item

"A bold and expertly plotted page-turner." (Courtney Summers, New York Times best-selling author of Sadie)

From the author of The Cheerleaders comes a thriller about best friends on a weekend getaway that goes horribly, dangerously wrong.

Three best friends, a lake house, a secret trip - what could go wrong?

It was supposed to be the perfect prom weekend getaway. But it's clear something terrible happened when Claire wakes up alone and bloodied on a hiking trail with no memory of the past 48 hours.

Now everyone wants answers - most of all, Claire. She remembers Friday night, but, after that...nothing. And now Kat and Jesse - her best friends - are missing.

What happened on the mountain? And where are Kat and Jesse? Claire knows the answers are buried somewhere in her memory. But as she's learning, everyone has secrets - even her best friends. And she's pretty sure she's not going to like what she remembers.

The story of That Weekend is thoroughly engrossing, a true page-turner. This is a book that perfectly balances the action of the plot with character-driven elements. The twists and turns, the red herrings, are perfectly placed and well developed. I was kept off-kilter throughout the story, which is something I truly love in this genre. And the characterization was on point, whether you hated them, loved them, or just weren’t sure what to think!

Kara Thomas is one of my favorite authors of young adult thrillers. I’ve read them all, enjoyed them all (for the most part), and am always excited when I find out she’s releasing a new book. This one was one of my most anticipated reads of July too because it’s been about 2 years since she’s released a book and I needed my Kara Thomas fix! Was it as good as I hoped? Yes and no. The author is known for her epic twists and unfortunately, I guessed this twist WAY before it was revealed (like almost immediately when things started taking a weird turn). Did that take away from my reading experience? To a point, but not enough to completely turn me off the book. The way she writes is GOOD and as everything revealed themselves it was fun to watch the characters reactions. Sure, I wasn’t personally shocked, but I enjoyed the journey anyways.

I don’t want to talk much about the plot because I want readers to be able to experience it on their own and I definitely don’t want to reveal anything important in case readers don’t guess the twist prior to it’s reveal. If you don’t that’s wonderful! I hope you enjoy the twisted nature of it (because YES, it is twisted!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Just found Kara Thomas

I just recently found this author and I'm glad I did. I've read two books in four days while working full time. I completely missed my son walking in with flowers on Mother's Day. I felt for Claire so much in this book. I can't imagine living in the world of social media detectives. I wanted to just learn a little more about Ben at the end. I loved the book, a page turner for sure. I guess I wanted a little bow on top of the ending, you know; see how Claire moved on.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Mysterious than Chilling

Kara Thomas writes a head-spinner of a mystery with That Weekend! This is a read that will keep you guessing until the very end! While I was hoping for a little more mystery, a little more danger, and edge, it was still a read that had me hooked and eager for answers.

It was supposed to just be a fun weekend camping with her best friends, but it turned into a nightmare...one she can't even remember. When Claire breaks up with her cheating boyfriend just before prom, her best friends Kat and Jesse invite her with them for a camping trip they had planned. Even though they are dating, Claire only gets the third wheel feeling every once awhile. She's been friends with them for years and after her heartbreak, she was ready for some fun with her friends.

But that's not where our story begins, it begins with Claire waking up in the middle of the pathway with no memory as to how she got there. She has no memory of the last day, an entire day gone from her memory. Worse, her friends are missing; vanished without a trace and everyone is looking to Claire for answers.

As Claire struggles to remember what happened to her that day, she finds herself spiraling. There is a lot of chaos as search teams comb the forest and mountainside looking for her missing friends. Claire is trying to deal with losing her memory, losing her friends, and having everyone from her classmates to social media thinking she had something to do with their disappearance.

I will admit, that for awhile the pacing to this one is just a little slow. I get that Claire has lost her memory, so I expected that struggle to remember, a desire to help find her friends with no real lead. A bit of a slow pace is expected in this situation. But I was also hoping just for something a little more to be happening throughout all this, but alas, there wasn't.

It's not until almost halfway through the book that Claire starts her own "investigation." I mean, she doesn't think of herself as a detective or anything, but she follows a few bizarre clues, moments that led her to this or that and that's when things started to get more interesting! But I was completely unprepared for the twist that was about to occur in this book! That took me utterly by surprise!

In some ways, this book did feel a little too ordinary with just a hint of mystery going on. I was hoping for more danger, more chills, much like Thomas' previous books! I wanted a mystery that gripped me in and was dying to find out whodunit. I didn't really get that feeling here. Part of it was because Claire had no memory, but I guess I thought she'd get to the mystery solving a little bit sooner on her own.

That Weekend was a decent read, it just wasn't the chilling mystery that I was hoping for. It was more of a sedate kind of mystery read. One that didn't really have me as eager to get to the ending that I would've liked. True, I needed to find out all the who, what, where, when, why, and how of everything and there was some shocking details that came about in that realm. Although, they soon felt like they came out of left field and were simply there as added shock effect for the tale end.

While this wasn't my favorite read from Thomas, it was still an interesting mystery with a few chills and thrills thrown in here and there. The ending was where things really ramped up in that respect. I just wish things could've been a little more mysterious in the middle chunk. If you're a fan of regular kind of mystery reads, I would highly recommend this one! There's still enough mystery and edge to this one in the tail end that made it a more shocking read than I could have anticipated.

Speechless is probably the best word to use to describe my feelings at the end of this masterpiece.
The story was gripping, right from the start. Claire goes hiking with her best friend, Kat and her boyfriend Jesse, who also happens to be Claire’s crush. Claire wakes up, Kat and Jesse are nowhere to be found and she has no clue where she is. We then get to witness her journey trying to remember what exactly happened that weekend her friends went missing.
The twists and turns were spectacular. There were several times I gasped and got so giddy when we got to find out someone else’s thoughts and feelings on what happened.
And the SECRETS!! My god, I’ve never seen so many revealed but it was done in such a beautiful way.
That Weekend is definitely a contender for my top 5 books of the year.

This was a great thriller to get me out of a semi reading slump. Started and finished over a weekend and I can't say I've read a book that quickly in a very long time! Just couldn't put it down! Mysterious, dark, twisted, and not what you expect.

The pace was quick and good. I just don’t like the ending. All the incidents and nothing happens to any of players.

It’s been a long time since I have started and finished a book in less than a day. The story kept me enthralled from the beginning. While there was a bit of predictability in the plot, it was very well written. If it weren’t for the predictability, I probably would have given it a five.
