About this item

After a traumatizing event and rough sophomore year, Max Kuemper does his best to keep his head down and not draw attention to himself.

School and hockey are the only two things he can handle; it's all he can do to keep himself afloat. He wants to forget about what happened to him and bring the secret to his grave.

Confident and flirty Luke Kelly likes to play the field—dating as well as baseball. When he meets Max during a night shift at work, he takes an instant liking to him despite the other man's reserved exterior and shy personality.

But secrets have a way of coming to light, and both Max and Luke will have to come to terms with what that means for their relationship.

Includes a bonus prologue.

5.0 out of 5 stars really sweet and fun read!

I picked this up on a whim after looking into hockey romance and it was so great. I read it in a day, happily. Hockey wasn’t at all a main aspect but love and healing was, and I loved that. Max and Luke are such a sweet pair and I love how Luke was so kind and sweet and caring about maxs needs during recovery. This is my first book by Jj mulder and now I can’t wait to read the rest!

Before you start please mind your triggers, this story deals with topics that could be triggering. First can we just wrap Max up and give him all the love. I wanted to protect him also. These two were so great together. The writing was great with this story, the smexy was exactly what it needed to be, and please can we get Marco’s book! My only gripe was what happened to the epilogue?

    For future me:
    No cheating/sharing
    Dual pov
    Diverse side characters
No smexy until they are future in relationship

This story was handled and told with such care it meant a lot to read. The characters are so soft and sweet. I loved it! Although the subject matter was tough so it doesn’t lend itself to a reread as easily, it was still a great story I don’t regret reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars a little disappointing

Topic was HEAVY and a big part of the whole book. The story of max and Luke was cute but I don’t know, I didn’t really feel their deep connection and they didn’t even exchange I love yous in the book which is crazy cause you would think with such a HEAVY topic they would have a crazy deep connection because of trust. I don’t know, I just felt like it wasn’t that thought out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy & Sad

This book is a lot different from the other books written by J.J. Mulder. The tone and theme is much darker and sad. Where as the other four have been fairly light and sweet with low-stakes, low-angst and fairly little drama. That is not this book. This book revolves almost solely on the SA of one of the main characters and its ramifications on his life. The topic is so heavy and there is very little hockey shown or mentioned.

That being said it is still very good. But I would not recommend it to anyone who has experienced any type of SA as it can be very triggering. Things are said in great detail. I also would not reread this one. Because I don't really like to read sad themes in general.

My favorite part of this book was the couple cameos from the previous two books. It was nice to see what the other couples were up to.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ of 5 overall
    ????????.5 of 5 for spice
    ???????? of 5 for sweetness
????☕ - nothing in this book would be considered cozy to me

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive subject matter, but so good

So different than Shots on Net but just as good! I loved Max and Luke. I’m not sure how to talk about this book without spoiling it, honestly, because the characters are tied so closely to the plot. But I really just enjoyed Max finding his happiness again and the way that Luke was at his side and supported him and encouraged him throughout. I love that Luke smelled like sunshine for Max. So sweet!

One of the things I like as a whole is that JJ Mulder doesn’t have angst or unnecessary drama for the sake of drama between the main characters. Any misunderstandings or issues are always resolved quickly.
