About this item

Two boys fall in love in a deadly world, but it's the secrets they keep that might kill them.

Seventeen-year-old Zach was visiting his uncle in a small Montana town when a mysterious illness ripped through the world. Most died, but those who survived the Infection became mindless killers, spreading the disease with a single scratch. Now, a year later, civilization lies in ruins, and Zach is the town's sole survivor. Desperately lonely, he longs to return to his family in Seattle, but his fears hold him captive.

Eighteen-year-old Aiden is on a critical mission for the covert Scientific Collective, delivering vials whose contents could cure the Infection. Tortured by his boyfriend's death, he welcomes the risks of the perilous journey. When a militia attacks Aiden, he flees to Zach's town.

The boys escape together and soon form a bond as they comfort each other in this desolate and broken world. The farther they travel, the more their affection grows, as do the forces pulling them apart. But their greatest threats are the secrets they keep. Zach hides details of his uncles death, and Aiden conceals the vials sinister origins. In order to survive, they'll have to confront the truths that could tear their love apart.

Wow I love the wholesome love and great adventure story this author created. The characters are believable and the world oppressive and nerve wracking but oh so worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-stopping action punctuated by moments of heart-warming romance

I loved this story! Reading Together in a Broken World is like riding a roller coaster: lots of heart-stopping action (where whatever can go wrong does go wrong) punctuated by moments of heart-warming romance. Winters builds the romance slowly and believably, just as he builds a plausible and challenging post-apocalyptic world for his characters to navigate. I found the two young protagonists appealing, who despite their different personalities, needs, and histories, learn to trust each other enough to survive and work together.

Personally I would have loved more development with Curtis and Conner (no spoilers) they both had very significant roles. Overall I really enjoyed this book. Together in a Broken World is wonderful blend of: joy, sadness, longing, a lenghty journey with lots of detail. 9/10 would absolutely recommend.

There is no way I could stop reading this book. The book was so full of adventures and mysteries. You never knew what was going to happen next. I loved every character in this book and thought the world of Curtis as well as the carnival lady for being so special and caring to 2 unknown strangers. This book reminded me a lot of the 2020 pandemic when all of the world almost crashed. I highly recommend this book and praise the author for writing such an amazing story.

Interesting premise but some flaws. First is the global tsunamis triggered by the sudden collapse of the Thwaites ice sheet. Topographically, it couldn't have collapsed as an intact chunk of ice, which is the only way it might produce the tsunami described.

Then there are problems with the main characters. Zach is too terrified of the forest to leave through the forest, yet, he apparently was fine hiking for three days to trade with the old man in the junkyard and was able to take Aiden to it. Aiden deserved more character development. The character of Connor was a major character but not well developed, and even the villain needs more than he received.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well Deserved Happy Ending

The world building was everything I hope for in a YA post apocalyptic novel, and the slow burn was slow-burning until about 2/3 the way though. After that, everything felt a bit rushed and lacked the emotional intelligence that the first half delivered. That being said, the book really hit my soft spot having grown up in Snoqualmie and recognizing/having a connection with most of the locations mentioned. Overall this was an enjoyable read and I would recommend if you needed a fun, lighthearted dystopian break!!

Together in a broken world hits the ground running. I devoured this book. Aiden and Zach were reasonably developed characters. I say reasonably because they are young adults so they make young adult mistakes but they do learn and grow.

It was a rollercoaster of feelings while following along on their journey. The side characters were phenomenal. Curtis and Joe had my heart completely. I thoroughly enjoyed the deviation from brain-eating zombies to something more probable.

All in all this is definitely worth a read if you liked All That's Left in the World.
