About this item

Joseph Campbell, arguably the greatest mythologist of the twentieth century, was certainly one of our greatest storytellers. This masterfully crafted book interweaves conversations between Campbell and some of the people he inspired, including poet Robert Bly, anthropologist Angeles Arrien, filmmaker David Kennard, Doors drummer John Densmore, psychiatric pioneer Stanislov Grof, Nobel laureate Roger Guillemen, and others. Campbell reflects on subjects ranging from the origins and functions of myth, the role of the artist, and the need for ritual to the ordeals of love and romance. With poetry and humor, Campbell recounts his own quest and conveys the excitement of his lifelong exploration of our mythic traditions, what he called “the one great story of mankind.”

I am currently reading this outstanding work...Joeseph Campbell is interviewed about the power of Myths, The Archetypes, and Heroic Journeys from all cultures and all times. Piece this together with Dr. Jungs..."Man and his Symbols" ; "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" ; and "Memories, Dreams, and reflections ",
and you have powerful guides. Joe Campbell is like an inspired guide or Shaman narrating you as you reflect on the inspirational motifs of History. Dr. Jung said that at least 2/3's of his patients past the age of forty suffered from a sense of meaninglessness.

OMG! Haha. I LOVED this book. It was required reading for a class, but it completely sucked me in. I fell in love a little bit with Joseph Campbell. What an amazing, wonderful man and what a mind! And the intro to archetypes and mythology of humans totally grabbed me. I have ordered more Joseph Campbell books to delve deeper. This book will let you know if his more serious tomes are for you. This book is a series of conversations. Very interesting, highly recommended!
