5.0 out of 5 stars A little tricky in the beginning, but once you’re into it “Table for Two” won’t disappoint.

A little tricky in the beginning, but once you’re into it – especially “Eve in Hollywood” – “Table for Two” won’t disappoint. From the author of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” Towles’s latest work is a richly detailed and sharply drawn collection of stories, including a novella featuring one of his most beloved characters, Evelyn Ross. Six short stories are based in New York City and then a final novella is set in the Golden Age of Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages. Told from seven points of view, “Eve in Hollywood” describes how Eve Ross crafts a new future for herself – and others – in a noirish tale that takes us through the movie sets, bungalows, and dive bars of Los Angeles. Written with his signature wit, humor, and sophistication, Towles’s “Table for Two” is an enjoyable 5-star read.

I love Amor Towles’ books. Such a variety of writing styles and all are great. I enjoyed each of these stories, and especially the last one! Good old fashioned gum-shoe and compelling to the end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliffhangers all the way

This book was a great read, beautifully and gently written, the end of each chapter a cliffhanger, what fun! It keeps you guessing. The characters are developing as you read so you don't really know/trust them until the end of the book which I found to be anticlimactic. Amor Toeles hits again.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good

I prefer not to read short stories but this book certainly changed my mind. Each story held my interest and had great endings. 7 great short stories and then there is Los Angeles, Eve in Hollywood, wow, wonderful writing. I felt like I was watching a film noir movie. Set in LA in 1938/39, so many interesting characters. Charlie a retired detective, Prentice Symmons a has been actor with brains and sources, Billy a stunt actor wanna be, Jerry Litsky and Wendell, the photographers but Evelyn Ross, now there’s a dame. You can’t get enough of her story.
This last story is longer, complicated with the film industry as a backdrop. Even a few stars and mogul show up. Intriguing to the last drop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing short stories that connect through characters

I read A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW and was rewarded with the richness of classical literature in a spellbinding format. The writing was so beautiful and rich with details that I assumed I would never read such a book again. How could one author in one lifetime produce such art?
I read TABLE FOR TWO just to see how much less it would be....and I was delighted to find it to be as rich as GENTLEMAN. Stories could stand alone even though they are woven together in amazing ways. I am now proceeding to read everything by Amor Towles!

Amor Towles writing is superb and each sentence is a joy to read. The unique characters he creates kept me reading late into the night- especially Evelyn Ross. This is a book I plan to read again. He is wonderful at creating story tableaus from all over the world and differing time-frames- I look forward to his next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amor Towles Rocks

I love Amor Towles books. In fact, one of my all time favorites is A Gentleman in Moscow. His short stories are typically well written with the irony and character development that is Towles trademark. I would have given this four stars, but I am not a fan of short stories. Even with that caveat, I recommend you read this book. It won’t disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read

At first I had not realized that it was a collection of short stories. They were good but after 4 or 5 I had lost interest. After not being able to find a better book I went back to it and I was glad I did. The final story was great! Very well done and lives up to the author’s reputation.
