This is an amazing story with a wonderful magical system. I felt like it itched something I’ve been missing in my mage/wizarding books that I haven’t felt since reading Harry Potter. The world building, the character development, the not OP yet OP build was there. Honestly loved it all the way around and can’t wait to read the next one.

Personally I did enjoy the book but I do have a few gripes with it. The first being that, overall, the whole store is just giving you the events. For me there was no sense of story telling, just 'hey, this all happened' type of thing. Second being that every supposed big event in the story so far felt hollow. You could almost count this in the same point and point one but there was no sense of completion or solidity. No ramp up or down, just a plateau. And the third being that the characters sorta switch on a dime. I know in some of the chapters that weeks have passed by and a lot can happen then but it's pretty jarring to go from "hey, you're pretty cool." To "you're the scum of the earth." In like 3 pages.

But the story does has potential, I just wish the writing was a bit better.

I really enjoyed the book. The characters were well written, and the twist at the end i didn't see coming. Well done author.

Just so much fun, innocent heroes and black hearted villains - or spirits. A hero who is heroic and supporting characters that have distinctive personalities. A compelling mystery and imaginative monsters. It kept me turning paged until I was at the end. Just so much fun!

The grammar is fine, the pacing is a little wack at some points. Not a fan of the writing style. The plot has potential, the leveling and overall system is bland and seems to force users into abject slavery. Everyone despises our MC and he just rolls with it. Like its completely fine for them to consistently disrespect him for no real reason. He doesnt actually ever push back or grow as a character. I got bored fairly quickly as the exposition dumps are boring and feel like just another system someone is trying to rush to explain. Then they can get to an interesting part. I know he is in History class, but I dont care and certainly dont want to read a whole chapter about it. Especially since three other chapters are history exposition dumps.

4.0 out of 5 stars great story but missing some crucial information
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024
So first I am going to start with the three things that I found that could of either helped the story or provided us the readers with some useful information. My first issue that I noticed with this story is that we are never actually sat down and given an idea of Danny's age which I think left the author at a bit of a drift for Danny's maturity as there are quite a few times through out this story where I was trying to figure out if Danny was a 16 y/o with often bouts of maturity or a 18 y/o with occasional bouts of immaturity. A second issue though one that doesn't impact the pace of the story is ascendant mages and the fact that they come with no explanation of what precisely an ascendant mage is, why they matter, how they came to exist and etc.? There is quite literally no explanation of what an ascendant mage is just that they exist and people such as Danny's father is one along with the most(or all?) of the academy staff. My final issue however I believe has a significant but potentially subtle impact on the story, specifically the system. Though we get a reading of the system at the end of each chapter and we get some briefly but clearly stated information that you can only be a mage with access to the system we are never actually given any information about the system such as is the system a part of the world (and if so how is the empire able to grant and remove access to the system) or is the system a magic creation of the empire (and if it is a creation of the empire magic research that would mean that you CAN actually be a mage without the system) or alternatively if the empire didn't create the system did a random extinct but ancient and power (race? nation?) create the system? While I find that the system has a minor impact on the story and could easily be gotten rid of I am left wondering what the origin of the system is and why the empire has the authority to determine access to said system.

Now on a final note I would just like to point out that the author's way of dealing with Danny's summoner class was pretty awesome due to the fact that we get to see how overwhelmingly powerful Danny is when compared to his peers but we also get to see quite frequently times where Danny's class (ability?) is just completely outstripped when compared to the level of opponents Danny keeps facing due to having a bad habit of not keeping his nose out of business he doesn't have the power level to be facing, and all of this is done without feeling like Danny is being gimped or handed the idiot ball to allow for plot to "flow".

All in all I love the story and I have already purchased the second book and will begin reading it within the next day or so

The story is good. The only real thing I question is the "system" messages at the end of each chapter. They don't really add anything and the system is only mentioned in passing once or twice
