About this item

A heartwarming urban fantasy from New York Times best selling author Gail Carriger about redemption, destiny, and the enduring strength of found family (and caffeine). Narrated by Darcy Stark (AKA Shea Taylor).

Once upon a time, Trick went up against the sea and lost. Badly. Or so he thought.

What the sea decides to keep, it keeps forever.

Trick is a dratsie shifter, a river otter. He is charming, loads of fun, and just a little bit slippery. He’s running from a past he can’t forget, and he’s landed unexpectedly in the chaotic comforting embrace of a small town cafe and the world’s queerest pack of werewolves.

Unfortunately, it turns out the past has also refused to forget Trick. It washes up on his doorstep and gets instantly tangled up in marine biology conferences, twelve mermaids thrift shopping, and specialty cappuccinos. That past is grumpy, sexy, and wearing a very sparkly tail. (Don’t you dare call him a fish.)

Trick was just starting to feel like it was all going to be okay. But sometimes the sea decides to spit up a merman who has been looking for Trick for over a decade. And Trick will have to decide whether he starts running all over again or faces up to heartbreak and the childhood best friend who betrayed him.

"Carriger manages to keep things fresh and progressive in not only the contemporary urban landscape but in the diversity, humor and warmth she uses to complement some of the weightier elements..." ~ The Novel Approach (The Sumage Solution)

The San Andreas Shifter books stand alone and do not need to be listened to in any order, but if you’re a stickler, this book comes after The Enforcer Enigma.

Delicate Sensibilities?

This paranormal romance contains M/M sexy times, horrible puns regarding oceanography, and clumsy mermaids in high heels. Not for the faint of heart (or mouth or tongue).

Gail has the ability to write an entire universe of characters and stories that are lovable, relatable, deep, and hilarious. Each book in this series makes the reader feel like they're coming home and reveals the back story of yet another member of the San Andreas pack. This is a fast, fun read. Delightful.

Another great comfort book in the San Andreas Shifters series. Loved the shifting between past and present, it really gave insight into the main character’s pasts. The love story is sweet but with the right levels of sexiness and angst. Awesome side characters that grow in depth with each book in the series and have the perfect levels of sarcasm to keep the story from being like one of Max’s coffees (IYKYK). Definitely worth a read if you enjoy shifter romances and believe that love is love in all its many various forms.

I need more!!! Even if it is straight, Kevin needs his love. And I need to know how things go with Meymey. Though, having placed this in the same continuity as the Parasol Protectorate in Enforcer Enigma, I NEED TO KNOW HOW BIFFY IS DOING IN THIS WORLD!!!!!

Just a thought, not even a whole story, just a line would be nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Addition to the San Andreas Shifters

The humor, love, and found family elements were all present as expected. But I hadn't suspected merman society would be so regimented. Sato stole the show, and the solution to the obstacles confronting him and Trick was satisfying on so many levels. And let's face it, who can resist an otter shapeshifter!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to the World

I’ve enjoyed the San Andreas shifter series, and this was a good addition. This time around we follow one of the newer pack members, Trick, who is still unsure of his place in the pack or if he truly even wants to be pack. His trust issues stem not only from his awful family history, but from being left behind by the person closest to him, Sato.

The book switches narration between Trick and Sato, as well as from past to present. You get a pretty full picture of the backstory, as well as the character’s feelings and motivations. Carriger manages these changes back and forth expertly, so it’s easy to follow along.

I love this ever expanding world, and would absolutely read more if she decided to continue. If you’re considering this book, I definitely recommend you giving it a try.

Oh, it was so nice to be back with the San Andreas pack! I was thrilled to find out how things turned out for Trick. As always, wonderful writing and excellent world building. I learned a lot about mermaids, but I think I'm glad I'm not one. This book caused me to laugh unto tears in many places, but it also was quite poignant. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Gail delivers delight and intrigue, and some angst, again.

I ended up staying up way past my bedtime last night so I could finish reading the saga between and about Trick and Sato... as well as the pod of mermaids who got what they needed. Miss Gail delivers the goods, again. I love the way she shows the misunderstandings between characters, and the foibles of each character, as well as their strengths and how they mutually and collectively support each other.

This was such a lovely return to the San Andreas Shifters. I laughed and cried and smiled the whole way through. The romance was beautifully balanced on the double edged blade of sweetness and tension. Trick was delightful throughout. Sato was brooding and full of longing. And my heart ached for them and cheered for them beginning to end. Then their story is wrapped in the best community you could hope for. I loved it! ????
