About this item

Toby

Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but the hot guy next door totally gives off serial killer vibes. Why else would he know how long it takes to bleed out from a wound? Yeah, ok, so I asked, but it was research. Being an author definitely makes for some odd questions (someone had better clear my browser history when I die, that's all I'm saying). It's not like I'm stalking my hot neighbor or anything—there's nothing wrong with watching him out my window. Although I might have my own stalker (and not the cute harmless kind), which is kind of terrifying. Even if he isn't a serial killer, maybe my seriously sexy neighbor whose eyes seem to glow red (a trick of the light, I'm sure) can help me out.

Dexter

How do you tell your cute neighbor that cutting off your fingers probably won't cause a victim to bleed out? I don't know if trying out Toby's writing ideas is a good method of flirting, but there's just something about him that calls to my hellhound. He's adorable, awkward, and all kinds of clueless. He brings out my protective instincts, and I find myself wanting to please him, even if that means figuring out some of the answers to his rather bloodthirsty questions. When I find out Toby might actually be in danger, nothing will stop my hellhound from protecting him. He's mine, even if he doesn't know it, and I'll tear apart anyone who even thinks of hurting him.

I really enjoyed the first series but this one was even better! There is just something about sweet, clueless & total badass all mixed together (when written by a good author) that makes for the best books! Hopefully as in the first series we will see these mc’s again!

Lots of fun, lots of snark, just the right amount of gore. Toby is a sweetheart and such a hoot and he found the perfect mate in Dex. This is my second Shannon Mae book, plan to go back and read all the Beginner’s Guide books and looking forward to Quinton and Liam’s story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want my serial killer!

I think it's safe to say that a serial killer can be one of the sweetest characters we've ever read.
Toby is a writer of somewhat dark paranormal romances and Dexter is his neighbour who is all about torturing and killing extremely bad people. They are obviously the perfect couple! And they were a lot of fun to read.
The story is well-paced and, despite taking place in a short amount of time, it doesn't feel rushed at all.
All the interactions are just wonderful and a total joy to read. The side characters are so well-written and leave us wanting to know more about them.
This book is ideal for when you just want to relax and have some fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully fun, sweet and hellhound hot!

This was just a pure delight! Making golden retriever energy into supernatural hot is pretty much the best thing to ever happen to fantasy imo, and this is the best I've yet to find!

Dex and Toby are both adorable and hilarious and all of the secondary characters were loveable. The world building was complete enough to feel effortless and real, like this could happen to anyone lucky enough XD

The author was absolutely truthful when she said the darker elements happen 90% off page, and what we do see is pretty tame. I'm really squeamish so I appreciate getting the interrogator tail wagging hellhound without having to suffer through reading the actual torment part of his job description!

Super fun read, one of my favorites of the year so far. I know I'll go back to more than once and I can't wait for the next book! I definitely recommend this one. 10/10, no notes, would read again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Intro

I really liked this one. Not sure if I’ve read anything by this author before but I like her style and the ???? scenes are well-written.

Toby is a likable character who is very enthusiastic about supernatural beings and MM romance, so any reader should feel an affinity with him. LOL. His “serial killer” neighbor turns out to be a hellhound who finds bad people and sends their souls to hell.

The world building is a bit unique for this genre. Not all paranormal creatures exist in this world (no werewolves or dragons, but there are angels and oracles) and the ones that do - like the hellhounds - behave a little differently than what I’ve seen in other books.

Dex’s pack are more like brothers and it seems they’re creating a little compound for themselves so we’ll see more from them in future books and I’m looking forward to reading them.

    I loved this book!

I got slightly weird vibes about Dex when he first popped up, but I ADORED him. He’s such a golden retriever of a hellhound.

I saw a Reddit thread with the exact premise of this book a week before I read it, and thought “that’s hilarious I would love to read something like that”! And then I started this book and LOVED it.

I mean a “serial killer” who lives next door to a mystery writer who sort of is trying to figure out if he’s a killer? But also the killer trying using his targets as research for the writer? Such a meet cute! (Don’t worry, they only take out the veryyyyy bad people who really deserve it)

This whole story was just so freaking cute, and I loved Toby’s quirks and the way that Dex just kept dropping off “stray humans” at the coffee shop because they would find a good home for them!

I am so excited for this spinoff series, because I already love Dex’s pack and I need more hellhounds in my life ASAP.

I did really like this book. I love the paranormal hellhounds. My only hangups was repetitiveness and everything has to be so politically correct now. Like the author said in the notes everyone is not going to respond the same or enjoy the story. There is too much explaining now and explanation for everything just write. Ok ok ok I apologize for rambling. 3 stars and yes I'll give the next one a go.
