About this item

People say there's a fine line between love and hate. If you ask Grady Armstrong, the line's as obvious as the one across the middle of a hockey rink.

So he can't explain why he doesn't walk away when his Grindr hookup—a guy who accused him of impersonating himself—turns out to be Max Lockhart, a rival player Grady once punched in the face. Apparently, Max can goad him just as well off the ice as he can on it.

Max Lockhart shows up thinking he is going to expose a fake. Instead, he hooks up with a guy who claims to hate him. And has a good time. A really good time. But that doesn't mean players from different teams can be together.

Max has always wished Grady would relax a little. When the season starts and Grady accepts Max's offer of help with finding someone to date for real, Max gets his wish. But he should've been careful what he wished for because now that he knows Grady is a big softie under that prickly shell, he'd rather keep Grady for himself.

Grady only goes on a handful of dates before he realizes he has a lot more fun with Max. But he can't be falling for a rival player… can he?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book in the series

This has all of my favorite elements of a hockey romance novel: a romance between two rival players, enemies to lovers, mutual antagonism, a character with a perpetual grumpy wet cat face, a playfully mischievous character who is a pest both on and off the ice, a push and pull that was fun and not angsty, a cute dog, and absurd tattoos. Grady and Max were hot, fun, and oddly wholesome. I also recommend the follow-up An Unrivaled Off-Season.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really sweet!

I’ve been reading a lot of crap lately so something that’s actually good was a nice change of pace. I really liked Grady and Max. I also liked that there actually wasn’t a significant age gap this time. The characters felt real and likable and were really nice to read about. I’m sure a lot of readers are familiar with Heated Rivalry, and it strikes me that this is the ending Shane and Ilya should have had, with the support of their teams and friends and no doubt about their ability to be impartial. Overall, though, I think this NHL is nicer than Rachel Reid’s NHL.

This book belongs to one of the best MM hockey romance series out there, and I think this is my favorite in the series. The writing is seriously good, the spice is quite nice, the rivalry is done so well, and you’ll fall in love with the characters. The amount of hockey in the story is perfect. I don’t want to forget I’m reading a hockey book, you know? But you don’t have to be an avid fan of the sport to enjoy the scenes where the characters are playing or it’s discussed. It’s obvious the authors know hockey well, and I appreciate it. The ending does seem abrupt but there’s a novella afterwards, and it’s a wonderful read, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars cute and predictable, but still hot and sweet

3.5 cute, predictable, could have been tighter at times and more original with dialogue and supporting characters (one of the sister’s love life just felt like advertising for a spinoff bonkers love story), still sweet, hot, and enjoyable.

Most of the hockey also felt realistic for the most part.

3.0 out of 5 stars Downgraded from 4 ⭐️ because of the non ending

I was really into this one! Was going to say it was my favorite from the entire series. I loved how far in the relationship we got to see the characters from book 1 but I really enjoyed this enemy to lovers story and how well they clicked. I was very excited reading towards the end to see how it all gets wrapped up and stay up past midnight to finish it for what? It’s barely a HFN… I don’t even get to find out who won the cup at the end. I kept scrolling for more and that was it, the end.

I did like their tattoos, thought it was funny and cute!

"Maybe the reality wasn't as dramatic as sports media liked to pretend, but archnemesis was only an exaggeration because neither of them had superpowers."

TLDR: This book has the best love declaration line ever written. It would be the obvious pick for the teaser quote but I don't want to spoil it for you.

Obviously, this book is a rivals to lovers hockey romance. It once again has the grumpy/sunshine dynamic and it is so well done in this book. This book may be the best of the series. I love the way the story unfolds. How they get together in the beginning is hilarious. The development of that relationship is subtle and sweet. This book has the best love declaration line ever written. It would be the obvious pick for the teaser quote but I don't want to spoil it for you. We also get a bit of a view of them actually working through their relationship's issues. Personally, I love that. I love to see a relationship have struggles that are worked through as a team. Per usual with this series there are some heavy topics but for the most part everything is handled with levity, humor, and joy. The spice level is kicked up a notch in this book compared to the first two. Overall, if you like the first two books you'll love this. If you're jumping straight to the enemies to lovers book, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Rating: I will re-read this book. (I already have.)
????️: 4/5 - There are more than a handful of explicit intimate scenes
????: 5/5 - lots of hockey in this book

One of my longtime absolute favorites! Max and Grady are so sweet together, a proper enemies-to-lovers story with so many feel-good moments. Wish there was an audiobook!!

i really liked the two main characters, and i felt like they had good chemistry. a good amount of pining, and miscommunication to really make it feel like they earned the happy ending. Max’s character arc was a little flat, but he had such a good personality on the page it was easy to excuse. my favorite in the series, and i had low expectations after the second which had nothing listed above. great read ????????
