About this item

What happens when your tormentor becomes your protector?

Oakley Farrow is your typical high school senior. He stays up late, cramming for finals. He has impossible deadlines to meet. He worries about his future as graduation lurks just around the corner.

He has to defend himself from his abusive uncle. He has to keep his sister safe. He has to survive the constant torture from his bully, Asher Brooks—the seemingly arrogant and cruel star quarterback.

Okay… so maybe not your typical high school senior.

When things start to change—when Asher notices the bruises marring Oakley's skin, the ones he didn't put there, and that evil gleam in his eye morphs into one of concern—one thing is for certain: his life just got a whole lot more complicated.

Anyone But Me is an MM bully romance with content for mature listeners.

Omg. This book hit me in all the feels. The depth of the characters was truly wonderful in a book so short.. I couldn't read it fast enough, needing to know what happened next. My heart was breaking one moment and full of joy and cheering the next. It was such a wonderful, heartbreaking, and lovely story. All the stars ???? wish I could give it more than 5. So worth the read. Will have to buy a copy of this to reread over and over again. Thank you JD Frost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love and mystery intertwine in this gripping debut novel!
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024
The author's exceptional talent shines through in this debut novel, and I believe the majority of readers will thoroughly enjoy it. The book's early success and positive reviews are a testament to this talent. Personally, the story felt somewhat lacking in authenticity, or perhaps it was a question of believability. The dynamic between characters like the Uncle and Asher gave off mixed signals, leaving me uncertain of the overall genre - whether it was a queer romance, a romantic thriller, or something entirely different. The narrative had a dramatic, soap opera-like quality that could easily translate onto the big screen. While most readers will find this book fantastic and engaging, I sensed a slight yearning for more. I can’t quite place it but that’s what I needed. Something that showed me exactly who this author is as a writer. Something that screams this is a JD Frost book!

Despite the fast-paced and gripping nature of the plot, I found myself wishing for stronger emotional tension between the characters and a deeper connection. This minor disconnect influenced my four-star rating instead of five. Nonetheless, I am genuinely excited to see what future works this talented author will produce. Congratulations on your well-deserved success, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rollercoaster of emotions

The hours I missed of sleep because of this book, the tears, the headaches even hahaha such a ride of emotions it took me through to get the the best ending ever! Definitely reccomend this book, it has just the right amount of angst, pain, tension, I could NOT put it down for anything! Even at work it had my mind occupied and antsy to keep reading! The connection between Oakley and Asher had me even writing some lines down and urge me to draw these 2 characters out!( I'm an artist) for the plot alone, I wish I could give this book a 10 star review. The only thing I can complain about it, their is some spelling mistakes, but I was able to get past those, and still enjoyed the drama and tension. Delivered just the way the author should. Read it! If you love pain, suffering with a big happy tears ending, then grab it! It's worth it all!!

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit over the top

This is the first time reading this author but the story wasn’t for me. I knew it was going to be dark going in and I don’t have an issue with it but the way it developed didn’t lend itself to be believable. The MC gets bullied at home by his aggressive, alcoholic uncle, which ok, believable. How this man can wield so much power over everyone in this town to the point they see the abuse he is causing and even after caring for the child getting abused rather not cross him… not so believable.

The bully at school story. Yes I can see how someone might show interest in such a dumb way as picking on the cause for their affection but to cause them physical harm and for over a year… I mean sure that can happen I guess but how that turns into instant lust not as believable.

And then after they start hooking up it’s 0-100 in seconds. They are somehow soulmates!

The storyline also with how the MC gets amnesia is also just a bit crazy! It does have a sweet HEA.

What a great first book. I really enjoyed this book, the characters, the storyline and this authors writing style. I love a good angsty story with a ton of hurt comfort and it really delivered. I loved our poor sad Oakley. Just trying to graduate so he can get away from his abusive uncle. And I adored Ash. I'm not a huge fan of the bully trope. I don't like when MCs are nasty to each other. But this one was different. It turns around quickly and Asher really makes up for it. I just loved this book!!

Good story. Easy read. Kept me engrossed enough that I finished it in one night. I thought the author did a great job when introducing characters to the story. I was really impressed that I thought she was an America writing about America until she spelled tire the British way...TYRE. It was shocking really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut!

This writer has some real potential. This was a really good debut novel. The story sucked you in, and the plot and suspense kept me intrigued and reading. My only critique is that the author should have gone darker. I don't mean the subject matter in the plot either....that was dark enough. However, I felt like they tried to write the bully trope but was too scared to really commit to it . Maybe the author was afraid it would turn people off. I don't know. I felt like Asher was a bully for like 2.5 seconds and then did a complete turnaround all within the first 15% of the book. There could have been a lot more darkness there and push and pull between the characters. Will everyone like the dark? No, but there are plenty of us out there that do, and that's why we read the bully trope. I do give the author props for doing this trope in the m/m genre. In my opinion, it's not done enough. To many m/m books are all ridiculously sweet, nice, and boring. I would love to see this author go dark like obsessive/possessive OTT morally grey or even better black alpha character with some stalking thrown in just for fun. Put that with the well written suspenseful plot, and you would have a hit on your hands! I'll definitely keep an eye on this author, though I think they are really going somewhere!
