About this item

A hopeless romantic meets a jaded radio host in this cozy, Sleepless in Seattle-inspired love story from beloved author B.K. Borison.

Aiden Valentine has a secret: he’s fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore’s romance hotline, that’s a bit of a problem. But when a young girl calls in to the station asking for dating advice for her mom, the interview goes viral, thrusting Aiden and Heartstrings into the limelight.

Lucie Stone thought she was doing just fine. She has a good job; an incredible family; and a smart, slightly devious kid. But when all of Baltimore is suddenly scrutinizing her love life—or lack thereof—she begins to question if she’s as happy as she believed. Maybe a little more romance wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Everyone wants Lucie to find her happy ending…even the handsome, temperamental man calling the shots. But when sparks start to fly behind the scenes, Lucie must make the final decision between the radio-sponsored happily ever after or the man in the headphones next to her.

I am BEGGING someone to make this into a movie - it's the kind of story that you can visualize in your head, making the characters come to life in the most visceral and smile-inducing way. It's absolutely a love letter to the rom com movies I grew up with, the ones that shaped my love of the genre. And it's also so fresh, fun, SEXY, and one-of-a-kind. There's chemistry between these characters from that first phone call, which grows and expands along the way. They're opposites in their views on love, but they fit together perfectly in all the ways that count. I loved watching our jaded hero fall head over heels for his girl before he even knew what was happening; he is swoony in his actions, even though he'd deny that with words. I also loved that our heroine was strong enough to know her worth and hold out for a love that felt right. Their love story comes together over a short period of time, but we spend so many extended moments with the characters that I felt like I was falling right alongside them. I binged this SO FAST, and loved it the whole way through. I think it might be my new favorite from the author, and the bar was already sky high.

The story follows Lucie, a single mom who is mortified to discover that her 12-year-old daughter called into the city's romance hotline on her behalf. Sure, Lucie rarely dates, but that's because she doesn't want dating to become just another chore - she's holding out for that magic kind of love, the one that happens without trying to force it. After arguing with the hotline's host, Aiden, for a while, Lucy thinks that's the end of it. Until their conversation goes viral, and suddenly the city is rooting for Lucie to find love. Somehow, she finds herself agreeing to co-host the radio show for a few weeks while looking for love amongst a mountain of potential suitors - all while sharing the airwaves with a man who openly admits that he's fallen out of love with love. As Lucie and Aiden search for her perfect match, they stumble onto something unexpected.

I devoured this in one sitting, because it felt like I was watching a movie play out before my eyes and I was wholeheartedly invested in seeing these two get together. It's a delicate balance to have Lucie actively seeking out other guys while slowly falling for our hero, but Borison handled the situation with ease. It was really refreshing to have a single mom heroine who has such a rock solid relationship with her co-parent. They're lifelong best friends who happened to have a baby together as teenagers, and he is her biggest cheerleader. The cast of characters adds plenty of comedic relief whenever the story starts to veer into emotional territory (strong "parent with cancer" energy with this one), deftly navigating between the heartfelt moments and the humorous ones. And the spice! It's the kind of slow burn that SIZZLES once it kicks into high gear, with spice that's intimate, revealing, and smokin' hot. The story made me smile and swoon in equal measure, stealing my full attention from start to finish. I definitely loved it! I was lucky enough to receive an early copy, and am voluntarily leaving a review of this charming romance.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A love letter to hopeless romantics—a must-read!
Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025
First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison gives all the nods to the early 2000s rom-coms in this refreshing cozy romance that will have its readers giggling and kicking their feet!

When the author said that this is "a love letter to love" and "for the hopeless romantics and the reluctant ones too," she 100% meant it and delivered.

"What's wrong with being a romantic? I can be a confident, independent woman and still want someone to hold my hand. To ask about my day. It's a good thing to want passion and excitement and care. Attention and affection. I don't want to settle for anything less than that." [...] "I want goose bumps. I want to be wanted."

Lucie is a hopeless romantic who’s put dating on hold, because she refuses to settle for anything less than real effort, as she should! But one night, she’s caught off guard when she finds her daughter calling a radio show for dating advice…for her. What starts as a deer-in-headlights moment turns into an unexpected opportunity: joining the show and getting help from its anti-romance host.

Aiden: "All right, Baltimore. Stick with me. We'll be right back after these messages from our sponsors."
Lucie: "We will possibly be back after these messages from his sponsors."
Aiden: "One of us will absolutely be back after these messages from our sponsors."

For six years, Aiden Valen has hosted Heartstrings, Baltimore's Romance Hotline, despite being anti-romance himself. But his cynicism is starting to seep into his work, turning him into a grouch who’s lost all passion for the show. Everything changes with an unexpected call from Lucie’s daughter.

"The first thing Maya said when I took her call was, “Look. My mom might kill me, but it is what it is.” What it is, apparently, is a lot of dialogue about her mother’s lackluster love life, accusations about a cult, and—I look at the clock—a full minute of silence. I haven’t had this much fun in the booth in months."

Pure perfection! An absolute masterpiece! This book had me grinning like the Cheshire Cat from start to finish. I was kicking my feet, slapping the bed, squealing, and laughing out loud. And yes, I was full-on swooning and stomping my feet in public at the gym! I couldn’t get enough. Someone, please give me 100 more just like it!

If this book taught me anything, it's that being alone doesn't mean being lonely. Family isn’t just who you're born to; it’s who stands by you, loves you, and lifts you up. Lucie has wonderful people in her corner. From her meddlesome yet hilarious ex and his partner to the gossip-loving neighbor who randomly shows up at Lucie's house; even the radio station crew is rooting rooting for Lucie.

I absolutely adored Lucie’s relationship with her ex and daughter’s dad, Grayson. Living practically next door, they have no concept of personal space—him more than her, barging into her house without a second thought. He had me both cackling and tearing up with how deeply he loves Lucie and wants her to find her own happily ever after. The story was already lighthearted, but Grayson brought an extra dose of charm and chaos that made every one of his appearances a true delight!

Aiden: All right, Baltimore. We have a guest in the booth tonight, his name is—
Grayson: Listen up, lizards. There's a new daddy in town.
    Aiden: Oh, boy.
Grayson: That's right. Lu has not been getting the respect or attention she deserves, and I'll be taking over her search for Mr. Right.

Aiden Valen climbed to the #3 spot of my list of favorite book boyfriends. This man... THIS MAN! He is THE standard! He had me swooning from the moment he met Lucie until the very last page!

    Lucie: I think you're a closet romantic.
    Aiden: Decent human being.
    Lucie: Secret, swoony boy.
Aiden: I think if anyone could convince me to believe in it, Lucie, it would be you.

Despite his cynicism toward dating and romance, Aiden’s crush on Lucie had him acting in ways he never expected: always showing up for her and caring more than he let on. Whether it was wanting to take down anyone who made her cry, turning her night around after she was stood up, or keeping a note in his glove compartment with all her favorite things so he’d never forget, his actions spoke louder than his words again and again.

    Lucie: You can ignore me.
Aiden: It's impossible to ignore you.

Aiden taught me something that may not be entirely realistic, but it was undeniably beautiful: If his heart doesn't drum to the beat of my heart, I don't want him.

Overall, First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison is a must-read delightful rom-com. This will definitely be in my top 5 favorites of the year!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and spicy romance
Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025
This sweet and spicy romance was a great read. Aiden hosts a romance hotline on the local radio station, which is funny since he is a total cynic. Family illness has made him a guarded, unwilling to risk man who keeps the brakes on any emotional investment. But into the radio station and his life comes Lucie. Lucie is a single mom, although her ex lives next door with his boyfriend and is an active dad and they have an unusual but happy extended family. Lucie's pre-teen daughter and family and friends are worried about her. She doesn't have much of a life outside her daughter and work -- Lucie is a mechanic -- and all her male co-workers are also concerned about her.

So her daughter Maya calls up the radio station and asks Aiden to help find her mother some dates. Lucie is mortified, of course, when she finds out, but recognizes that they have a point. Lucie is honest, but admittedly a romantic. She tells Aiden she is looking for a little magic in her life.

The dating scenarios don't work out too well, but Aiden and Lucie, sitting side by side in the radio station, soon discover some chemistry of their own. They both avoid it, but eventually can't deny their attraction. Their banter in getting to know each other is great fun. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
