Mark Greaney’s The Gray Man series is BY FAR the book release I look forward to most every year, and this one is very much worth the wait.

The book opens with Court and Zoya, taking some time off laying low and living life in Guatemala, when a group starts murdering all the world’s foremost AI scientists and researchers around the world. When an old friend of Zoya’s reaches out to her for help in getting one of the scientists to safety, it results in Court and Zoya becoming unwitting targets. In an effort to get the targets off their backs, they approach the problem in the way that they are able to. In the process, involving the best characters from the series including Don Fitzroy, Matt Hanley, Chris Travers, Zack Hightower and Angela Lacy.

This book is terrifying and fun all at the same time. It is tightly paced, with action sequences that flow, and plot and pacing that makes this book impossible to put down. The subject matter, while fiction is firmly rooted in reality, and I would encourage you to research the singularity, or the unforeseen and unanticipated choices AI is already making in research. One of my favorite things about Mark Greaney is that I have never bought one of his books and felt like I got ripped off. He never jumped on the “I can just crank out poorly researched 300 page books” bandwagon, and his books always show effort and pedigree, and I appreciate it. All of his characters are well developed and are written in a way where you wish you could have a beer with them in some alternate world. If you have never read a Gray Man book before, I am very jealous of you, because you are not going to be disappointed. There is something in this book for everyone. Although you may get less sleep than normal, because it’s that hard to put down.

Book Review – The Chaos Agent – Mark Greaney
Bestselling author Mark Greaney tells another captivating but fearful story in book 13 of the Gray Man series, “The Chaos Agent.” The book is about how high-tech artificial intelligence could possibly be the deadliest war ‘gamechanger’ since the creation of gunpower. The story is exceptionally exciting, intellectually intriguing, and sensationally suspenseful. Someone is killing the world’s leading experts on artificial intelligence and the first nation to field advance artificial intelligence military capabilities could possibly end up ruling the battlefield in future military conflicts. Court Gentry and his girlfriend, Zoya Zakharova, another accomplished assassin, have assumed new identities and are keeping a low profile in Central America when an old acquaintance of Zoya’s offers them a job helping extract a Russian scientist who is on the kill list of the recent assassinations. They reject the offer but are soon on the run from someone trying to kill them as well. Subsequently, the two get involved and confront the situation head on and this is where the excitement begins! The Chaos Agent is a dark and thought-provoking look into artificial intelligence and how, if its advanced technological proceeds are utilized in the wrong way, then it could possibly do substantial harm to the entire world order. It reminds me of the Skynet scenario in one of the Terminator movies where the machines were taking over everything. This startling, but fascinating narrative serves as a warning that if AI developments go unchecked, then we – society as we know it now – could very well be in trouble. Thrilling, Chilling, and Alarming, The Chaos Agent is one of Greaney’s best pieces of work. He continues to lead the action thriller genre with relentless action, absorbing storytelling, and engaging characters. Although somewhat lengthy – 560 pages – the story is still very stimulating, exhilarating, and entertaining. This book confirms why Mark Greaney is one of my favorite authors.

THE CHAOS AGENT by Mark Greaney

The latest installment in the Gray Man series will keep you up long past your bedtime and when you eventually succumb to slumber, be prepared for nightmares. Mark Greaney remains at the top of his game, crafting characters and a series arc that keeps the reader wanting more, but this installment is something altogether different.

To date, the weapons have always been pointed at Court Gentry. In THE CHAOS AGENT, they are pointed at all of us.

I’ve been an admirer of Greaney’s talent for a long time, but not for the reasons many others are. His character development compels me to be invested in the protagonist and the whole of the ensemble cast. The pace and action are always top notch, forcing me to turn the page, and the plot always features twists I didn’t see coming. Furthermore, Greaney sets the standard for researching the world in which he sets his stories. But as a retired CIA Officer, what I’ve most admired is this – even when what he describes might not happen in the real world, today, it’s utterly plausible.

With a keen understanding of the possible threats posed by AI, this story chilled me to the bone. Greaney did his research and it shows. Prior to retiring from government service, I caught a glimpse into what is referred to as Emerging and Disruptive Technologies, working with leading experts in various fields which included AI, Quantum Computing, and other fields. In short, while not everything Greaney described is technically feasible in this moment, his writing is certainly plausible, but more to the point, it will be reality at some point. Perhaps not for several years, but it is on the horizon.

So well done. Another masterful installment in the series and a cautionary tale. Disclaimers of nightmares notwithstanding, read this book.
