Having read Auntie Mame in the 5th grade, and understanding it, I realized, when I reread it 20 years later, I was expecting more of the same stew of deliciously odd and brilliant characters, costumes, and settings. This is certainly a 21st Century version, the locales being Southwest tourist attractions and the main characters' personnas reversed. If I were not his mother's age, and if I'd not lived through the sadness of The Great Coming Out, the Great Recession, and what COVID did to our sense of social safety, I would have laughed more. But for me - and I say this in full appreciation of Mr. Greer's well-deserved awards - it proved my conviction that the last 50 years have taken us on a roller coaster ride we will never be able to get off.
