“SIMPLE DATA LEADS TO COMPLEX CONVERSATIONS.” A quote I saved from the book The Perfect Story by Karen Eber.
By now, you and I, and just about everyone else, know the importance of and challenges with data that we all have. In particular, the shift away from descriptive data and towards building diagnostic, predictive, and most ambitiously prescriptive analytics. Especially with access to millions of data points with the evolution of the AI/ML space every day. This holds true for almost any industry and role in the corporate world. But even in our personal lives.
I’ve read many books, took many courses, learned Power BI, SQL scripting, you name it. After all of this prep work, I began to make sense of learning data and build powerful visuals that can help our customers make decisions on what to focus on next in order to optimize learning to create maximum impact to what matters now.
But I was missing something - I had no idea how to tell an impactful story with the data I had built. My research brought me to the incredible Karen Eber. Her TedTalk, followed by her book The Perfect Story, gave me the insight into data storytelling and how to connect with my audience (often times including C-suite executives) and relay the message that my data had in a way that resonates and inspires action that leads to our partnership success.
It was an absolute honor and pleasure to finally meet Karen in person at a book signing near me! Knowing I will see her, I rushed to finish reading her book on a rainy day during our family vacation last week and I am so grateful I did! You should rush and read it, too! Karen’s writing is captivating and her book is extremely practical with checklists after each chapter in addition to valuable case studies she’s gathered through her work. Regardless of whether you are a people leader or an individual contributor, what industry you are in, what role you hold - this book will teach you how to prepare to influence and persuade, relay a powerful message, connect the dots in a relatable way and create impact.
If you have read it or when you do, let me know what you think!
