4.0 out of 5 stars Local Woman Missing: A Gripping Disappearance with Twists and Turns
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2024
Mary Kubica's "Local Woman Missing" is a suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. The story unfolds in a small, seemingly peaceful community that's rocked by the disappearance of two women, Shelby Tebow and Meredith Dickey, along with Meredith's young daughter, Delilah.
The novel is narrated from multiple perspectives, including members of the affected families, friends, and neighbors, as well as by a mysterious stranger. This allows readers to piece together the puzzle from various angles, building suspense and raising questions about each character's motives and secrets.
Kubica does an excellent job of portraying the emotional toll the disappearances take on the characters. The desperation of the families, the frustration of the police, and the growing fear within the community are all palpable. The novel also explores the complexities of family relationships, particularly the bond between mothers and daughters.
    Some key considerations -
    1. Twists and Reveals: The book is full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When you think you've figured things out, Kubica throws in a new piece of information that changes everything.
    2. Well-developed characters: Despite the multiple perspectives, Kubica creates well-developed characters that readers can connect with. Each character has flaws and vulnerabilities, making them all the more realistic.
    3. Fast Pace: The story moves quickly, with short chapters that make it easy to devour the book in one sitting.
    4. Slow Start: Some readers might find the beginning of the book to be slow, as Kubica sets the scene and introduces the characters. However, the pace picks up quickly once the disappearances occur.
Overall, "Local Woman Missing" is a well-written and suspenseful thriller that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. It's an excellent choice if you're looking for a book to keep you guessing and emotionally invested.

5.0 out of 5 stars so good …

I’ve got to say that this book was very good. It captivated me right from the start and kept my attention all the way through. It kept me guessing and wanting to know what was going to happen next, and who done it etc. I was surprised to finally find out what happened and who was behind it, it hurt my heart a little but everything unfolded beautifully and all came together. These are the types of reads I love to endure. I devoured this book in 24 hours, wanting to know what what came next and what was going to happen. It was funny, sad, surprising and made you mad all at the same time. Loved it and I’d recommend everyone to read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and turns!

Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica was a very entertaining Psychological mystery. There are many twists and turns that kept me guessing. It is about a family, Meredith, Jason are parents to Delilah and Leo. It is written in first person from each characters position. Also, two ladies that live across from them, Kate and Bea. Meredith and Delilah are missing and the story unfolds from 11 years back as all happens and then the present as where everyone is today. I enjoyed this to the end and that was my only criticism was the ending seemed to end abruptly. I think they should have had something about how the characters ended more of an epilogue. This one kept me up reading for sure!

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting story

I both liked and disliked this story for a few reasons.

I liked the viewpoint of the brother whose sister has returned. I thought that was a very unique and well done view point. It’s honestly the only viewpoint I enjoyed. Each character also had a different voice which is pretty impressive, and difficult to do. I also really liked the story. I DID NOT see the twist coming so great job on that. And it was done so naturally.

Okay now dislikes. It’s very monotone. Like it’s trying to be a police drama but reading it and watching it is very different. All other characters except the brother were very long winded. They’d go on rants about things that would never matter. And I didn’t feel like it was really helping to get to know the characters. I want to know what happens to Carly. We got everyone else’s stories and happy endings except the child who was harmed most in the story.

I was planning on giving this book 2 stars up until the twist. I think the twist made it enjoyable enough.
