About this item

Read by the author.

Discover simple habits and easy-to-implement daily rhythms that will help you find meaning beyond the chaos of family life as you create a home where kids and parents alike practice how to love God and each other.

You long for tender moments with your children - but do you ever find yourself too busy to stop, make eye contact, and say something you really mean? Daily habits are powerful ways to shape the heart - but do you find yourself giving in to screen time just to get through the day? You want to parent with purpose - but do you know how to start?

Award-winning author and father of four Justin Whitmel Earley understands the tension between how you long to parent and what your daily life actually looks like. In Habits of the Household, Earley gives you the tools you need to create structure - from mealtimes to bedtimes - that free you to parent toddlers, kids, and teens with purpose. Learn how to:

  • Develop a bedtime liturgy to settle your little ones and ground them in God's love.
  • Discover a new framework for discipline as discipleship.
  • Acquire simple practices for more regular and meaningful family mealtimes.
  • Open your eyes to the spirituality of parenting, seeing small moments as big opportunities for spiritual formation.
  • Develop a custom age chart for your family to more intentionally plan your shared years under the same roof.

Each chapter in Habits of the Household ends with practical patterns, prayers, or liturgies that your family can put into practice right away. As you create liberating rhythms around your everyday routines, you will find your family has a greater sense of peace and purpose as your home becomes a place where, above all, you learn how to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars What every parent should read

Love this book so far, my husband and I are reading together. Habits are so crucial in a family especially when it comes to raising children that will love the Lord. These chapters are so simple and practical. I also appreciate it doesn’t tell you specially how to parent but parenting based off a biblical model. For example discipline. Doesn’t give you the hows and when’s, but how our attitudes towards it should be and how to prepare ourselves mentally and spiritually for the task. When we think through our own actions and examples our children see it. This book helps guide in that. Creates really good conversation starters and sets us up with healthy boundaries and leadership in parenting.

Not sure whether anyone can relate to this…. was born and raised Catholic. Went to college (and read DaVinci Code) and fell away from faith. Had an identity crisis and found Jesus. Could not get wife to agree to go to Catholic church, so we settled on Methodist (contemporary service). Read the bible for the first time of my life, and realized it was way different than I expected… lots of beautiful stories that are all intertwined. Wanted more and more to be like Jesus but was not sure what that would look like from a practical perspective. Friend (studying to be a pastor) and I were having dinner one night, and he showed me The Common Rule. He said, what if we try this out with a few friends for a month to see how it goes. 2.5 years later, we are still meeting on Sunday evenings speaking to the grace we observe when practicing these habits. The nerdier of us downloaded an app to help keep track.

With this as the background (i.e. super fans of the message), of course we pre-ordered Habits of the Household. Really love it b/c again it provides practical ways to share the message of Jesus with our son and as a family. The Common Rule really strengthened our marriage, and I see the Habits of the Household strengthening the family. For example, one way to strengthen the family is not to divide the family… seems obvious in writing it… this book provides a great methodology to avoid overreacting to disobedience. Another great section is around screen time. We are not as disciplined as the Earley’s, but we are getting better during dinner time… kids love fire… the candle really works.

Anyway… to avoid too much rambling… cannot recommend buying this book and giving the habits a try. It is very well written. Humble and relatable. Promise if you give this a try for a month, you will become closer to Jesus and your family. That is 100% guaranteed.

This book made me laugh and cry. I don’t usually write reviews but this book is truly and important message for all families at any stage. Easy read, relatable and so sweet!

4.0 out of 5 stars For younger families

I definitely enjoyed this book and will put some of the suggested practices in my family’s routine. But it is geared to younger children, I think. Yes, older kids are mentioned but I think it was written from that perspective. It would be interesting to have this same book written and all his children are in high school. Overall, a great read and appreciated the recommendation of other books as well.

This book is a must read for all families!! I’ve read through it twice and I’ve highlighted and taken notes on so much of it! He breaks down how to apply all the biblical themes in each chapter and gives you examples and a clear roadmap. This book gives very practical methods to apply discipleship to your everyday life and letting it lead your family. Everything is backed by scripture as well as research articles and journals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical & Adaptable

Loved the practical, and adaptable, principals to use at home! It was real and honest, and my family have implemented several of these disciplines since I read this book months ago, and we are better for it! Even if you don’t love every habit, it challenged me to think about what habits and foundations we want for our home, and to make it happen.
