About this item

With the Builder threat behind them, the time has finally come for Jason and his team to hit the road.

Eager to get back to the adventuring he’s been longing for, Jason is excited to not be at the center of world-changing events. But before he goes, one last attempt to pull him into politics has him leaving Rimaros with a strong final impression.

With new places to visit and new people to meet, the remnants of recent events have scarred the land and left lingering dangers behind. It's a busy time for adventurers willing and able to fight with monsters. Threats that once loomed in the background start coming to the fore, and the team prepares to join the fight. Their angelic new adversaries are patient, powerful, and remorseless, using such unconscionable strategies that mass slaughter is only the beginning.

Jason is forced to confront that his growing power may give him more in common with his foes than his friends. While this opens a path to uncovering the methods and objectives of their enemies, it also brings him to their attention. To them, this makes him yet another tool to be used. But when conflict spills into epic battle, they'll be the latest to discover that challenging Jason Asano is a very bad idea.

I keep rereading the series in anticipation of the next book to come out and every time I get the chance to see more of this amazing universe and the characters that make it a home. The growth and character development are so beautifully articulated.

I wish my friends were Jason and his friends lol.

Well worth the read. A great continuation of the story. The author does a great job with character builds and keeps it fresh.

Alternate universe, magic, GameLit

Very well edited. You get a lot of story at nearly 800 pages, but the price reflects that. Each chapter is obviously written piecemeal; instead of continuing seamlessly, the first two to five paragraphs are spent recounting the previous chapter; if you are reading the chapter in isolation, that might useful, but when all the chapters are strung together, it's a bit annoying.

While I'm at it, triple spaces when giving ability descriptions continues to be excessive. Having a minor font change, one associated with power descriptions would have been fine. However, meh.

The fight between Jason and the messenger Tera at the end of the book I have issue with. Messengers can isolate one opponent for a one-on-one duel until one is killed and the other is victorious, the condition being the target having to be separated from allies by some space for the ability to take effect. The implication was that the bubble they fought in was static, that it didn't move around. This inference was strengthened during the chapter describing Clive's fight.

When a writer establishes a situation and then violates the very rules they set up can leave you feeling betrayed. I'm reminded of a story about a Navy SEAL who thought it would be funny to work under the family car and fake having it crush him. Because he wanted to play a practical joke on his wife. Some of his buddies warned him it wasn't a good idea, but he did it anyway. Unsurprisingly, his wife didn't appreciate the joke and divorced him. But my initial reaction was like the wife seeing Jason and Tera not just fighting, but crashing around and injuring others, smashing through buildings, and even running away -- meaning the duel bubble wasn't really a bubble at all, making the initial description of what was happening lacking. This contradicted the previous description and boundaries of the messenger ability. So, yeah, not happy with that whole chapter because it didn't match previously established plot rules. The author could had someone point out the discrepancy and pulled a "reason" why their fight differed, but no. One ding.

I'm invested in the series, but that was quite a jarring speed bump at the end; it could have done cleaner. Was having a minor side villain losing control of his bladder that important?

I'm in for book 10, but disgruntled.

This was an amazing read. So many big plot fillers and amazing action. Things are hitting the next level and it's so much to enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this so much

There are only a couple of book series that have kept my attention and made me want more and more. This one is top of the list. The world building, character development, story flow are all amazing. The MC is op and wonderfully vulnerable and flawed at the same time. If you love a character driven story with pop culture references, hilarious banter and a side of philosophy, this is your series. Magic system is robust and innovative. Not super heavy on stats, but enough to gain an understanding of powers. Gonna be so sad when it ends

But that’s kind of his thing, right? I am thoroughly enjoying watching the evolution of Jason and his team. I am whole heartedly looking forward to the twists and turns of Book 10! This book ends with a wonderful thought. “Sometimes, the world will try to break you. Either you have to bend, or make the world bend.” Write on, Shirtaloon, I can’t wait to see where you take us next!
