5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking & Horrifying

This novel was heartbreaking and horrifying, especially because its true. I've been a RN for 21 yrs and I can't even begin to imagine what these nurses went through and lived through to survive. They are just as much heros as the US military. I've read quite a bit about WWII and until a couple yrs ago I'd never heard of the "Angels of Battaan". Frankly, I find it disgusting on the part of the U.S government to make these women sign papers forbidding them to speak of their experiences simple to cover their own butts. Hopefully their stories will become more well known and get the recognition and remembrance they rightfully deserve.

Not the typical WWII story, it is a moving account of what happened in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation.

My namesake was in the Bataan Death March. He spent 3 years in Camp Cabanatuan prison camp only to be placed on a "hell ship" in January 1945. Only to be killed by American bombers who sank his ship while he was in an unimaginable confinement in the bowels of the ship.
This is to say I have an appreciation for WWII in the Philippines. Also I have read many volumes such as the Normans' excellent telling.
"When We Had Wings" brings it. And gave this man the full range of emotions in a captivating tale that is historically accurate.
Thank you for your wonderful writing.

This is a great story of friendship, honor, love and hope.
It depicts war that I had never considered from the nursing side and the horrors that people faced in Manila and the Philippines.

This book was wonderfully written. I learned more about some history I wasn’t aware of, and some amazing nurses serving in the military at the start of WWII. This book had me crying at times. Thank you to all the military who serve to protect our country.

Never developed the friendship of the 3 nurses until they were POWs. Slow, repetitive and slightly boring until the last quarter of the book

War is hell. I have never read a book about WWII in the Philippines. I have watched many documentaries about this. The writers had great way of describing the hell. Being a nurse myself I can only imagine the horrors of trying to help/treat the other internees. Stealing childhoods from the young is a horror and a shame.
