"Propulsive ... a dizzying Gothic whodunit."
New York Times Book Review

Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—
I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrill Worm Review

I recently finished reading The Only One Left: A Novel and found it to be a captivating and thought-provoking experience. This book weaves a gripping tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat with its intriguing plot and well-developed characters.
The story revolves around a compelling mystery that unfolds through a mix of suspense and emotional depth. The author masterfully builds tension, leading to unexpected twists that kept me guessing until the very end. I appreciated how the narrative delves into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships, making it more than just a typical thriller.
The characters are richly portrayed and relatable, each bringing their own unique perspective to the story. I particularly enjoyed the development of the protagonist, whose journey is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The interactions between characters felt authentic, adding layers to the narrative that enhanced my connection to the story.
The writing style is engaging and flows smoothly, making it easy to get lost in the pages. The author’s ability to create vivid imagery allowed me to visualize the settings and feel the emotions of the characters deeply.
The Only One Left: A Novel is a fantastic read that combines suspense, emotional depth, and well-crafted storytelling. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping mystery that will keep you engaged from start to finish. It’s a book that lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page, making it a worthwhile addition to any reading list!

This was an excellent read, even the twists had twists. The characters were believable and grew throughout the book. Towards the end it was a non-put-downable suspense filled story

I really like this book. I loved all of the characters. Very good character development. It is beautifully written, moving seamlessly between the past and the present. There are multiple twists that I never saw coming. And just when I thought I figured it out then there was another twist after that. It was a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO GOOD

I don’t normally write product reviews, but I can’t help but boast about how GOOD this book is & how great the author is.

Riley Sager has become one of my favorite authors. His books have you thinking you know exactly what’s going on & what’s going to happen & then there’s a twist (or two or three) that you never would have thought of. This is the first book of his I’ve read & it was SO GOOD. Probably my favorite read of the year, beating out The Silent Patient. The House Across the Lake has the same twist that this book did - unsuspecting!! While you’re reading, you think you know exactly what’s going on & then - multiple times - he blows your mind with new twists.

I HIGHLY recommend this book - & any of his books - to anyone looking for a thriller suspense book that will keep you on the edge of your seat & keep you guessing until THE VERY LAST PAGE!

I loved how this book began and the creepy vibe be it gave, but I was tired of all the surprises by the end. I just kept reading because I had already invested a day in this book. I do like that it ended on a Hope-ful note.

If you haven't read this book, then do it! Now! I haven't been this enthusiastic since my husband took the trash out and ALSO replaced the bag!
I read it in a day, taking advantage of a rare lazy (and rainy. If you live in Florida, you'll know) Sunday.
I was reading few pages here and there while trying to stop my toddler from reaching the chandelier to probably, hang on it like Tarzan. Few pages while cooking, few pages while having lunch... I was thinking to find a way to make the book waterproof so that I could read it in the shower!!! LOL
Ok, this was just to give you an idea of how hooked I was!
The story is very well written and structured. You learn new details about the plot and the characters in every chapter and that allows you to try and guess what's going on. It's fast paced but still taking time for describing the surroundings, the people, the atmosphere giving you the possibility of imagining everything in your mind, without boring you.
(That's right, dear authors: we don't need an entire page describing a plant, for example. I promise, it doesn't make your book better written, just sleep-inducing!)
I guessed some of the plot twists but not all of them: there is a crescendo towards the end that leaves you speechless and you can't stop reading until you reach the very end of the book.
Great read, I wonder if the other books from this author are as good!
