About this item

The story of a climbing adventure gone wrong in a remote Alaskan mountain range, the impossible rescue attempt that followed, and the fraught cost of survival

In 2018, two couples set out on a climbing expedition to Alaska’s Hidden Mountains, one of the last wild ranges in North America. A rarity in modern climbing, the peaks were nearly unexplored and untouched, a place where few people had ever visited and granite spires still awaited first ascents. Inspired by generations of daring alpinists before them, the four climbers were now compelled to strike out into uncharted territory themselves.

This trip to the Hidden Mountains would be the culmination of years of climbing together, promising to test the foursome’s skill and dedication to the sport. But as the climbers would soon discover, no amount of preparation can account for the unknowns of true wilderness. As they neared the top of an unclimbed peak, rockfall grievously injured one of the climbers while he was out of sight, leaving him stranded and in critical condition.

Over the course of the next nine hours, the other three climbers worked to reach their companion. What followed was a pulse-pounding rescue attempt by Alaska’s elite Pararescuers in one of the most remote regions in the country—raising difficult questions about wilderness accessibility, technology’s role in outdoor adventure, and what it means to weigh risk against the siren song of the mountains.

With visceral prose, Michael Wejchert recounts the group’s rescue and traces the scars left in the wake of life-altering trauma. Weaving the history and evolution of rock and alpine climbing with outside tales of loss and survival in the mountains, Wejchert gives a full picture of the reward—and cost—of following your passions in the outdoors.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put this book down.

This book is very well written. But within the first few pages, I realized I needed to educate myself about the climbing world and the terms used. The book is great and I would read anything by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ADVENTURE IN THE CLOUDS: AMAZING SURVIVAL STORY

I loved the adventure story....I am not a mountain climber, but I enjoy reading experiences of all kinds.
This was well written, however, some of the language did not translate. In other words, if you are not
a mountain climber, I did not know what a lot of the items the author was referring to (as far as "what the heck was that?", meaning I did not know the usage of could not even picture what the author was talking about.) Having that said, it was still interesting and awe inspiring. What remarkable strength and endurance it takes to embark on this type of adventure. Not for the faint hearted! Enjoy a true story, and to know what happened to the crew during and after this monumental experience. I would recommend!

Even though I have never in my life climbed anything bigger than a ladder, I found the book very interesting. Wejchert took me deeply into a sport that I never would ever consider due to its risks. I thought the book was well written and, although it went into more detail about past and current climbers and the details of the climbing community and their gear, I still enjoyed peeking into a world that I would never experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling main story with interesting and valuable musings/side quests.

Enjoyable read with lots to learn from the author’s own personal experiences, the experiences of the climbers he writes about, as well as rescue services and their complexities. As a trauma RN it was also interesting to read about how life unfolds after injury, and the experience of friends and family during a time of crisis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Details of harrowing climbing accident and rescue
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2023
After about the first 25% of the book I was tiring of personal details like what rocks were climbed as Boy Scouts, but the rest was gripping. A horrendous accident, probably unavoidable (except by choosing another place to climb), and interesting details of rescue and the climber's medical recovery.
Still one must wonder how much it all cost the public, and if climbers should have to post significant rescue bonds to get permission.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something different in Climbing Nonfiction

The author tells the true story of two climbing couples who share a love for climbing & for each other. Their decision to climb an unspoiled, unexplored mountain in AK turns into a long nightmare for all four of them when one has a long fall in a very isolated area. The book covers an expanse of time before, during & after the fall, as well as some other interesting true tales. The writing style is very pleasant to read & the author keeps up the level of suspense quite well. Of the many climbing books I've read, I really enjoyed this departure from the usual! You WILL enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good main story

The story itself is very interesting. I understand there should be some backstory and background on the main characters but not done on such minutiae simply to fill pages. That one of the characters went to a Boy Scout camp, started an unsuccessful local climbing club as a kid, etc is simply not interesting background material. Less drivel about the history of every involved person, including the helicopter pilot, rescue crew, etc and this would be a 4 chapter book.

I did not know much about mountain climbing but this book was interesting as the author wove the story into information about climbing. Even when I know how the book ended, it kept be turning the pages.
