About this item

"Please...someone...help us. We’re at The Lodge, the snow is everywhere. We’re trapped. There was an argument last night...things got out of hand. Someone went missing in the middle of the night. We think they might be dead...."

Two days ago, the Wilson family checked into the imposing, glass-fronted Lodge, surrounded by snow and perched perilously on the edge of a cliff looking out to a gray sea. Not everyone was looking forward to the family get-together. But mother-in-law Angela insisted the winter trip would help heal their rifts....

Danni: the new wife who feels like an imposter. She doesn’t trust anyone—even her husband. But is she trustworthy herself?

Fiona: the ex-wife who feels that all eyes are on her. She’s here for the sake of her children, but she fails to hide her seething jealousy toward her ex-husband’s new family....

Angela: the mother-in-law who can’t help but interfere. She planned the family holiday to get everyone together, but does she really want to keep the peace?

Scott: the husband torn between his ex-wife and his new wife. He says he wants to do right by his family, but he’s been telling lies to them all. Now his darkest secret is about to be revealed.

After a night of arguments, morning breaks with a single scream. Not everyone came to The Lodge play to happy families. Someone came to get revenge....

A completely gripping, utterly twisted thriller that will leave your jaw on the floor. Perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Perfect Marriage, and The Girl on the Train.

One of those books you just want to read straight through. Many twists and turns. Just perfect for a long snowy night.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another twisted story from Sue Watson

Good book. A little slow at times. Characters are just all a bunch of head cases. Premise is good. Husband gone bad. Ex wife bitter. Teens sad because of their parents. Winter. Snow. Storm. Isolation. What could go wrong with all of them in the same lodge?

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn’t receive a free copy for a review, blah blah

Looks like I’m the first reviewer who actually paid for the book. (I’m the 89th review, just how many free books do these publishers give out?!)
On to a real review, not a compensated one …
*POSSIBLE SLIGHT SPOILERS*
The premise was great and the book started out well. Good, juicy drama. I love a fun stranded-in-a-storm setting.
Then it got tedious and completely unrealistic. Things happened and characters were introduced seemingly just to stir the pot … but it made no sense why they would. For instance, the hit and run — who was he? Why was it brought in as such a strong plot device, then just fizzled out? Why in the world was Jenna invited to this family get-together? Why didn’t Fiona tell everyone about the food she saw? Why did Danni go walking off, knowing how horrible and dangerous the weather conditions were? Why was Scott portrayed as this wonderful, wise teacher and man, when in reality he was a vile, sexist, jerk? Etc.
I felt things were inconsistent, again, such as the weather. One minute, it would kill anyone who walked out the front door, and the cops can’t get there, the next, hey, let’s all take a leisurely stroll!
Ms Watson, in my opinion, took for granted we readers would be able to figure out all of the vague backstories concerning relationships and such, but how could we? I still don’t understand Jenna’s motives, nor Scott’s, nor why Scott and Danni seemed to immediately go scorched earth on each other, nor why Angela suddenly got dementia as soon as it was convenient, and on and on.
The twist at the end fell flat for me. The conclusion of the book was awful. Such terrible people — self-centered, horrible cowards. It left a bad taste in my mouth to end things that way.
All that said, I was mildly entertained enough to give it three stars here. I think it could have been a much better book with tighter editing. Things just didn’t flow well or come across as realistic.

Couldn’t put it down til I finished the book. Started slow then the tension and suspense built through every chapter - never guessed the who was guilty

First, you won't like any of the characters but that's ok. That are all flawed in some manner. The best part was I wasn't able to figure out who "did it". It was a creepy story with creepy characters. Definitely fun to read and worth the money.

Not a lot of likeable characters in this story. Seems all involved at the Grandmother's birthday celebration at the lodge either hated or didn't trust the guests. Did keep reading to find out who the murderer was actually two killings. Twist at the end.
