About this item

Fans have described the trilogy as Game of Thrones meets The Three Musketeers.

When Soren is plucked from the streets and given a place at the prestigious academy of swordsmanship, he thinks his dream of being a great swordsman has become a possibility. However, with great intrigues unfolding all around him, Soren discovers that he is little more than a pawn to the ambitions of others.

As he is swept from high society into exile in foreign lands to escape those who see him as a threat, he must rely on a mysterious gift and the lessons learned at the academy if he hopes to survive in a society where disputes are settled with a sword.

The Society of the Swords Trilogy contains the complete series.

What a swashbuckling adventure! Great characters and propulsivley written plot. Thoroughly satisfying! I wish it hadn't ended!
The audio version is equally terrific!

I don't know about Game of Thrones, but this does feel an awful lot like Three Musketeers crossed with The Count of Monte Cristo. Some criticisms of Hamilton are that his characters and some of his plots are left hanging. That is a fair criticism. However, it is not a fatal flaw. He does open up doors that he doesn't go through over the course of the trilogy. Indeed, the most intriguing part of the trilogy is introduced in the last book, for the most part, relating to the 12 Mages from the Eastern Empire. However they seem to be an afterthought to these books. That was disappointing as Hamilton did a pretty good job connecting them to The Barbarians in the east. And, of course, nothing is said of Princess Alice in the North. The action was along the Fairly brisk pace I don't know about the long run on sentence, previous or the or. I read most of this as an audiobook, but I did not hear any more on sentences (heh). Alessandra tends to disappear for large portions of the narrative, and she is not the focus of the story. Nevertheless, it seemed odd that she would disappear for so long, reappear as a active player and then disappear for the Final Act. Other characters are like that along the way. Without giving away any spoilers, I found it positive that some characters who might be considered major characters don't make it through and, in fact some canned I rather abruptly. I suppose that could be the offense need to Game of Thrones? In any case this isn't a memorable series, but it is a entertaining one, and it's smart enough to hold the interest of a doctor of letters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done

It was well written and well narrated. It was so good, I did both, read while home and listened while driving. It kept me enthralled but the author did languish in some places with description that could honestly have been done without. Overall, an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Trilogy

I had never heard of Mr. Hamilton, and after reading these three great books, I find that he has a great flair for characters, and his story line was imaginative! I loved the fighting, the weapons, particularly the Terraline steel swords, and if course, the magic.

I can't wait to read Mr. Hamilton's next work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling tale in a fantasy world rich with potential

The lead character's evolution from street urchin to sword academy student, slayer for hire, wartime officer and more make for a fast-paced and colourful narrative.
Secondary characters help enrich the tapestry and are well depicted, albeit succintly at times.
The last book had repetitive passages but helps wrap the full cycle of adventures neatly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Lightweight Read
Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2017
This was a lightweight beach read and not much more. The first book showed much promise as the the plot gradually revealed a series of surprising twists, intrigues and betrayals. In the second book, however, the main character stumbled through a series of episodes, one after the other, with a few too many convenient coincidences that nicely wrapped up the story. The third book suddenly introduced some additional main characters, spending a little to much time on them as they were of varying importance to the plot. Once again, the main character seemed to plod along. Despite the initial complexity of plots and intrigue, the book ended in a bland predictable manner, and ended quite suddenly, as if the author ran out of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun Read
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2017
Just finished the first book and I have to say that I couldn't out it down. Very faced paced, and fun. You get hooked on the main character. If you are looking for a cerebral history and a huge Cimex world, go elsewhere. If you want a fun ride, read this. Cheers ... I hope the last 2 books are as good, but love it so far. Thanks Duncan .
