4.0 out of 5 stars Tough subject matter but a great read

This is the second book in the FBI profiler series. It was hard to read due to the subject matter but I couldn’t put the book down. Such a great series so far.

Officer Rainie Conner lives is the small town of Bakersville, Oregon where crime is low. When a school shooting rocks the close-knit community, Rainie finds herself leading the investigation. A boys life is at stake and this case hits close to home. What led to this horrible event?

Pierce Quincy is a profiler for the FBI. He hears about the shooting and comes to Bakersville for research. As the investigation intensifies, they begin to speculate that someone else may be involved. Is a killer still out there?

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Community, BIG troubles

I first read this book in high school and loved it because I'm a native Oregonian and loved how small town problems and have HUGE consequences. The local sheriff's boy gets into trouble when a mystery man shoots up a small elementary school and the sheriff's boy is caught "red-handed" and faces a ton trouble, when a cop Lorraine Conner becomes the target and takes the heat from the boy and draws the killer out into the open and puts an end to it in her own backyard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one from Lisa Gardner!

I have read many of Lisa Gardners books, and this remains among the top! It was a page turner that I couldn’t put down. This story does have some brutal and graphic details involving a school shooting, but is written with Lisa Gardners finesse and attention to detail. I absolutely recommend it to any reader that loves the mystery, thriller, or crime genre.

The book was good but she has written better. It was a bit hard to read, a lot of characters to keep track of. It is a book you need to keep reading. If you put it down it is hard to remember where you were at.

Kept you guessing up until near the end. Liked having a flawed heroine and hero. She's a very good writer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad ending

If the last two chapters had been written differently, I would have given this a four or five star rating. But the author screwed up the ending so it's a three star. And I had been thinking about buying the next book, but not any more. The problem is she drew all the ends together and then tries to explain how the heroine would have to deal with the legal system....which would NEVER HAPPEN in real life. I can't figure out why the author did that. Want to know what she did? Ok, SPOILER ALERT.

Years ago the heroine had come in to find her mother (who mistreated her) with her head blown off. Then her mother's killer, an abusive boyfriend, who had raped the 17 year old heroine came up to her door and was opening the door and grinning. Now she would be justified shooting him because he killed her mother and she was afraid he would kill her. Or she would be justified in shooting him because he had forcibly raped her and she was afraid he would do it again. But, no, she shot him and then hid his body under her mother's trailer, and no one knew about him. At the end of this book, she confessed and is thinking about pleading guilty to avoid a trial. Really, that's the way the book ends.
