About this item

The follow-up to the quarter of a million-copy-selling Sunday Times and New York Times number one best-selling Clanlands. Sam and Graham turn tour guides once again to bring listeners more epic tales from Scotland.

A seasonal meander through the wilds of Scotland.

'If Clanlands was a gentle road trip through Scotland, this Almanac is a top down, pedal to the metal up and down odyssey through the many byways of a Scottish year. An invitation to anyone who picks up the book to join us on a crazy camper van exploration over 12 glorious, whisky fuelled months. Mountains, battles, famous (and infamous) Scots, the alarming competitiveness of Men in Kilts, clans, feuds, flora, fauna, with a healthy sprinkling of embarrassing personal reminiscences thrown in. Much is explored, all is shared. It is a camper van cornucopia of all things Alba.'

From First Footing to Samhain, Fringe Festival follies to whisky lore, Sam and Graham guide listeners through a year of Scottish legends, traditions, historical and contemporary events, sharing personal stories and tips as only these two chalk-and-cheese friends can.

As entertaining as it is practical, The Clanlands Almanac is a light-hearted education in Scottish history and culture, told through the eyes of two passionate Scotsmen. The perfect escapist guide, The Clanlands Almanac is intended as a starting point for your own Scottish discoveries.

These 2 men have a strange aura when they are doing any kind of project together. It's a combination of true friendship, which shows through at every moment, thorough knowledge of each others flaws, and a genuine joy when revealing said flaws to the world. Month by month the tell you historical truths aboutthe clans, their peckish personalitiesand the resultant skirmishes and wars that followed. They talk about the beautiful scenery as well as the ancient architecture that are found throughout the Scottish Highlands. All of this is very enlightening and enjoyable to read, but the real gem lies in their wit. I have never picked up this book to read a few chapters without, at some point, breaking out with roars of laughter. As a case in point April has a section on the annual hunting of haggis which is worth the entire book. I loved reading it and will probably reread it at least once when I need a good laugh from 2 very interesting and funny men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Other than Amazon sending me the British version vs. the US version this is a great fun read!

Because Amazon sent me the wrong version the only problem is IF you want to make any of the recipes, everything is metric. Otherwise I cannot tell the difference. Loving this journey with 2 very funny and competitive personalities. The 20 year age difference makes for very funny banter between them. The historical info is pretty interesting and Graham is an excellent writer. Sam is also very good but seems to contribute less of the old Scottish history and more contemporary stuff. It's a real giggle in so many places. We can all use that right now. I understand the audio is also great but I chose to turn the pages vs. putting on my headsets and paying a subscription cost.

I quite enjoyed this romp through Scotland's Almanac! I love the series . ( Sorry guys, a Rankin fan here) However, I love visiting Scotland and this is worthy of a fun and fact filled, yet not boring travel guide..I suggest listening to the audiobook and reading along, the banter between both is well worth it! I hope if there is a next book, the songs will be sung by Richard Rankin..;)

I knew of Sam and Graham from the tv series Outlander. I was quite impressed how the series was able to weave a variety of topics (history, science fiction, etc) into the storyline. The series is complimented by the book because the actors-authors talk about various episodes throughout. Their shenanigans are only surpassed by the history of Scotland and the background of Scottish whisky. As a history buff, the information on the history of Scotland (Jacobites, Highlanders, Lowlanders, Culloden, etc) is the focal point. The discussions on whisky provide some tidbits which would impress a sommelier. The focal point of everything is the endless jabs they take at each other like two brothers. At times you cringe and laugh out loud at some of their insults and jokes. However, you can tell there is a mutual deep respect and admiration for each other. This is similar to siblings or a father-son relationship. I look forward to reading the New Zealand version. Great reading all around!

I am totally enjoying the Clanlands Almanac. I saw the series and read the first Clanlands book. This dives into more detail, and it is tongue in cheek mixed in with Scottish history and personal reminiscents of Sam and Graham. If you are a fan, this is a must. I was reading excerpts to my husband in bed, and we were laughing our heads off. Such a stress reliever in the current age. Highly recommend.
