Listen, this book has a lot of reviews and if you want something more in-depth and objective, I'm sure the review is out there. This one is going to get personal.
I read romance for an escape. Life is hard and sometimes the world is too much. I need reminders that no matter how bleak and hopeless it all feels, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That's what romance gives me. I don't want to see myself in books but I can't ignore how much I relate to Cyrus. Not just who he is and what he's going through but also family-wise. I don't cry when I read but I cried a lot during this. Specifically at lines that may seem unceremonious to some but if you've ever had a family member who struggles with addiction, those lines mean everything. I'm not saying the book doesn't exist but I am saying this is the first time I've ever read a romance that humanizes people with addiction and acknowledges that it's a disease. Not once does Cyrus bad mouth his mom and not once does the book make her out to be some heartless monster incapable of caring for her son because of drugs. It is said over and over again how much she loved him and how much he loved her and will keep her memory alive. It's validating in a way I didn't know I needed and I will forever be eternally grateful for this book's existence.
As for the rest of the story, it's beautiful but that goes without say. What I don't see a lot of people talk about is how hot this book is. People will name their favorite books with primal play and for some reason this one doesn't come up even though it's so fire and done so well here. Who doesn't want a self-sufficient hot mountain man to chase them through the woods in the snow? Don't judge, we all have dreams. Crow's story is heartbreaking and I think how he handles it is going to be a little polarizing for some. But, as with all Riley Hart books, life is complicated and messy, emotions are complicated and messy. He's doing his best and that's all anyone can ask for or expect.
But I love these two. I loved how deeply "there" they are for each other. It's got wrenching at times but beautiful, heartfelt, and handles with care like always. If you've never read Riley Hart book before I thinks be a great place to start. It's heavy at times but The HEA is perfect. Also the bonus epilogue but again, I have problems. Five stars because this has made the list of one of my favorite books of all time and that is saying something.
