At 47, divorced, and with no kids, I frequently say I feel like I don’t fit in anywhere, anymore. My also single friend sent me the link to this book. I Immediately ordered it, and devoured it, which is rare for me re a book. Turns out the author and her friends are my people, there we are. Finally. A story about us. Loved how she moved through her summer, shared Paris and her humor, the men, and the history of some trailblazing women. Excellent book. Absolutely loved it. And I’m recommending it to all my women friends. It’s a celebration of our freedom, and a reminder to all women, to find their own version. Can’t recommend the book enough!

I loved Glynis’ memoir “No One Tells You This” so I was really excited to read this book. Although she is a fantastic writer and I truly enjoy her point of view, this book was not that interesting. It had its moments but overall for a book about thoroughly enjoying yourself (personally and sexually I had assumed), it wasn’t that exciting or salacious. I wasn’t expecting a romance novel but the sexual encounters (except for one) were pretty mild and glossed over. I think I wanted more audacity, boldness, and funny sexual encounters as if a girlfriend was REALLY dishing on her crazy shenanigans. The book lacked her usual humor which I always find delightful in her writing. It did transport me to Paris which was absolutely enjoyable and the parts about her friend group and their good times were lovely! If you are looking for a book that feels like a friend recounting her trip to Paris in detail, get this book but don’t expect it to be too raunchy!

This book excited my brain, but quietly, and was paced in a way that was compelling, yet relaxed. While so much of the press is fixating on the sexual pleasure the author pursued, that is merely one thread of a very rich tapestry. Her narrative integrated personal power and vulnerability, that did include sexual connections from texting, sending images, to encounters but it was one aspect of the many ways pleasure is experienced in life. MacNichol positioned those rendezvous in the broader context of a sensual, friend-filled life which kept the focus on her needs vs a man's. I loved the many directions, like little side-streets, that this book led me through. I'm a big fan of Lee Miller so was thrilled to see her pop up, and now my interest is piqued to learn about some of the other women that were mentioned. I am invigorated by MacNicol's sharp, informed mind and ability to pull in feminist theory amidst the memoir structure, to publish even knowing the trolls would go wild with her truth. There is a quiet staying-power to her writing. I read No One Tells You This a few times over the years as questing along with the her teaches me things about the paths I did and did not take. I suspect I will re-read this (something I very rarely do) several times and do research along the way to learn more about the many amazing women she referenced. My wish is that this book leads to all kinds of ongoing joy and financial stability for the author; we need her voice in our culture!

My book club was looking for a fun summer read and decided on this book. While I appreciate that Glynnis MacNicol is an excellent writer, I just couldn't connect to the author's experience. I thought some of her writing offered relevant insights into our post-pandemic culture and I enjoyed the camaraderie of her network of girlfriends. I finished the book, but it was not a compelling read.

This was a fun read. As a single woman, of a "certain age", the questions MacNicol asks are many of my own. What is the place of single women in society? How do we navigate our lives? Most of all, what is the magical island she and her friends visit? It sounds heavenly!

If you are a woman of intelligence that is not ready to believe that your life is over just because you are in your 40s, this book is for you. It was rich with perspective and mindfulness. The weaving of history, humor, feminism and friendship is done with great mastery. Excellent and enduring. Cannot wait to hear more from this author! She makes you feel less alone and yet she also teaches you to value your independence. Beautiful.
