Post-COVID burnout is real for all of us. As a working mom and wife, self-proclaimed overachieving multitasking procrastinator, trying to juggle career and parenting, while maintaining a healthy marriage and body during COVID burnout, I found an amazing outlet listening to a podcast with Dr. Aditi Nerurkar. Since then, I’ve followed Dr. Nerurkar on social media, eagerly awaiting her self-improvement book. It delivers! She gets the struggle we face in modern times, trying to “do it all” and somehow pretend like it’s easy. “The 5 Resets” describes how the mind-body connection impacts our health, her personal struggle with what she refers to as our “canary in the coal mine,” and breaks down the resilience myth, using real patients as examples. “The 5 Resets” gives us a way to measure our own stress, actionable tools to combat stress and anxiety, all laid out in plain language (plus an amazing index.) I’ve measured my “Personalized Stress Score” and started using these tools in my life, including “The Bookend Method,” “Sticky Feet Technique” “Monotasking” and “Pomodoro Technique.” I would love to share this book with my doctors, friends, and family. It would make the world a better, less stressed place to live in.

I love this book! As a registered nurse, I find The Five Resets so helpful not just for myself but for my patients. I have used some of the stress reduction tools with patients already! It is reassuring knowing all of the tools are evidence based. I feel confidant using these techniques for myself and for my patients. Also, it is written in such a fun and engaging format. I took my highlighter out and have highlighted so many great nuggets of science! I think this is a book that will become a handy resource, that I will go back to often.

Dr. Aditi Nerurkar is an internal medicine physician, public health expert, educator, and speaker who specializes in treating stress and burnout. In this book, she provides a brief quiz to help you identify your stress score and track changes over time, and then she provides three research-backed techniques for each of her proposed five resets (plus a few bonus techniques) to reduce your stress and increase your resilience.

I thought this book was easy to understand and offered very practical suggestions for how to manage your stress and improve your physical and mental health. You can make small, manageable lifestyle changes that will make a real difference over time. Some of the problems she addresses, such as unhealthy relationships with news, social media, or food, didn’t apply to me, but I suspect everyone will find something of value here. I particularly liked the suggestions to Stop-Breathe-Be, Activate Your Sticky Feet, and Live a Lifetime in a Day. These are stressful times, and most people could probably benefit from the strategies this book provides.

The back matter includes extensive endnotes and an index.

This book is brilliantly written and so easy to read and apply to your every day life. Dr. Nerurkar breaks down the good, the bad and the ugly of stress and has simple strategies to really balance out your stress levels and maintain a healthy lifestyle. From setting small goals to writing out lists to achieve what you want — this is a must read for everyone. I feel calmer just reading 5 resets and I didn’t even implement the strategies yet!

I really enjoyed this book! The 5 Resets offers tools and strategies to help manage stress, in clear and actionable language. These strategies are supported by research and they’ve helped patients in her clinical practice. This gives me confidence that I’m not wasting time by applying these tools and strategies! I know this book will help a lot of people.

The author is an expert with both scientific training and real-world experince. So that’s important, of course. On top of that, the authors shares just the right amount of practical guidance (not too much, not too little).

What surprised me most is how easy it is to read each chapter. When I started the book, I didn’t intend to read very much on the first day. But I found myself wanting to read more and more. That was a wonderful surprise.

I always thought multitasking was a normal part of life. As a physician and mom it seemed like the natural way to survive. The 5 Resets have shown me how multitasking is not good for the brain. The rule of 2 has helped me to reframe changes I want to make in my life by focusing on things two at a time. Thanks Dr. Aditi!
